Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 9, 1919.
Application filed April 5, 1919. Serial No. 287,678.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH C. SHovEsrUL, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Decatur, in the county of Clearfield and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railway- Ties, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to railway ties, and particularly to metallic ties adapted for use upon line tracks, and to take the place of the usual wooden ties as now ordinarily employed.
An object of the invention is to provide a railway tie which may be made up of members stamped from sheet metal plates, and which embodies in conjunction with a body or base portion, means to retain the track rails in the proper position.
A further object resides in arranging with the metallic structure, wooden cushion blocks by whichthe rails are carried and given cushioned support.
Yet another object is to so construct the metallic portions of the tie and the cushion blocks, that when the rail securing structure is fastened in place both rails of the track, and both cushion blocks, will be securely held against displacement or shifting, the structure however being such that the parts are interchangeable and the cushion blocks can be removed and renewed.
With these and other. objects in view, which will be apparent from the specification, drawings, and claims, this invention includes certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will now be set forth.

Figure 1 is a view in perspective showing a tie constructed after the manner of my invention and illustrating the same in use.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional view taken longitudinally through one end of my improved tie.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective View of one end of the tie showing parts thereof disassembled.
As has been stated, the metallic structure of my improved tie is preferably made up of metal plate pressed or otherwise shaped to the proper form, although it will be appreciated that the partsmight be constructed in other ways. The body or base member 1 is of channel shape in cross section and is made of a length desired for the tie, the legs of the U-shaped form being extended sufii- I ciently to provide the desired depth of the tie. The body or base 1 is made thicker, as at 2, in the bottom thereof and threaded openings 3 are formed through the thickened portion 2 adjacent the ends of the base, similar openings 4 being provided somewhat in from the ends. 7
The legs of the channel shaped base are cut away or notched as at 5, between openings 3 and 4, and at both ends each of the legs has an outstanding ear 6.
A top member 7 provided with side portions 8 to fit over the upper edges of the legs of base member 1 has rail gripping flanges 9 at its ends, and this top member is made of such length that when the track rails 10 and 11 have their base flanges caught therebeneath, as shown in Fig.1, these rails will be spaced to standard gage. Top member 7 has openings therethrough in line with threaded openings 4 of the base member, and bolts 12 and 13 are inserted through the openings of thetop member and turned intoopenings 4 0 rigidly secure said top member upon the ase.
End clips 15 and 16 having side extensions 17 are provided to fit the ends of the base 1 in substantially the same manner as top member 7 and these end clips have flanges 18 which are shaped to grip the base flange of a track rail- Each of the end clips is notched on the side portions as at 19 to receive the side extending tongues 6,'and each has an opening 20 which alines with one of the threaded openings 3 when. the
clips are fitted with the notched portions receiving tongues 6. With the top portion 7 and end clips 15 and 16 fitted in place, the notched openings 5 of the base are uncovered, although flanges 18 and 19 overhang the opening thus left.
Cushion blocks 21 are made of a size to fit within the base portion and of length to fill to the ends of the tie when fitted therein to butt at their inner ends against bolts 12 and 13. These blocks have openings 22 formed therethrough in alinement with threaded openings 8, and as they fill the base member 1, cushion portions are presented in line with {)he notches 5 in the sides of the base mem- In use the tie will be placed in the usual manner, assembly being first made with top member 7 secured on the portion 1 by bolts 12 and 13, and cushion blocks 21 having been placed to butt against these bolts. As the track rails 10 and 11 are placed on cushion blocks 21 and are moved toward the center of the tie the base flanges will be caught by flanges 9 on top member 7, and a standard gage for the track rails will be established. End clips 15 and 16 are neXt placed with the notches 19 thereof receiving ears 6 of the base member and these clips are then swung down to bring flanges 18 against the base flanges of the rails. Bolts and 2-}: are then turned into the threaded openings 3 and end clips 15 and 16 are thus clamped down to securely fasten the tract rails, these bolts also acting to secure cushion blocks 21 against displacement. T he flanges 9 and 18 can be made of differentsizes for different weights of rails, or being all of one size, shims or fillers can be used to secure a proper clamping on the rail. Further, in case the cushion block becomes worn this block can be withdrawn upon removal of the bolt 23 or at and can be turned over, or reversed, the block being provided with a second opening 25 to receive the fastening bolt, when rcversed.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a metallic tie structure which can be cheaply manufactured and which will prove highly successful in use, due to the fact that the rails are securely clamped to the tie, and are at the same time given the desired resiliency or spring by cushion blocks 21, and also it will be apparent that the tie constructed after my invention will have a maximum life as the base, top memher, and end clips are practically indestructiible and the cushion blocks can be reversed and renewed. Also, it will be noted that the track rails are separated to the proper gage by top member 7 and are secured against spreading by clips 15 and 16, these latter beilig held against shifting by ears 6.
While, in the foregoing, l have described a specific embodiment, and have mentioned only certain possible ways of manufacturing, it will be appreciated that in practice I do not limit myself to such specific details, but may resort to any practical modifications falling within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A railway tie including with a channel shaped base member, a top member to be fitted over the middle portion of said base member provided with rail receiving flanges, end clips having rail clamping flanges, fast-enings by which said top member and end clip members are secured in conjunction with said base member, said end clips having notches at their outer ends, and side 8X- tending ears on said base member at the ends thereof received within the notched openings of said end clips.
2. A railway tie including with a channel shaped base member having threaded openings in the bottom thereof, a top member to fit over said base member in the middle portion thereof provided with rail receiving flanges at its ends and having openings aliningwith certain of said threaded openings, bolts turned into said threaded openings to secure said top me; iber upon said base member, cushion blocks fitted to the ends of said base member held by said bolts adjacent the flanges of said top member, end clips having notches-at their outer ends and provided with rail clamping flanges at their inner ends, outstanding ears on said base member at the ends thereof in position to fit the notches of said end clips, and bolts by which said end clips are clamped in place and said cushion blocks are secured within said base member. 7
