Description
V J. B. LINK. RAILWAY TIE; APPLICATION FILED JAN. 17,1913.
1,070,270.- Patented Aug. 12,1913.
nrirr JOHN B. LINK, OF PIRTLE, OKLAHOMA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 12,1913.
Application filed January 17, 1913. Serial No. 742,675.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN B. LINK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pirtle, in the county of Bryan and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railway-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in combined plastic and metallic ties for railway rails, and to the means for securing the rails upon the tie.
The improvement resides in the construction, combination; and arrangement of parts set forth in the following description and falling within the scope. of the appended claims.
In the drawing ther has been illustrated a satisfactory reductio of my invention to practice, and in the saiddrawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement with the rails attached, Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view taken approximately on the line a-a of Fig.1, Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 12-?) of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the rail engaging clips,Fig. 5 is a view of the wedge member for the clip, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the modified form of the device.
The tie comprises an outer metalliccasing 1, which is constructed from a single sheet, and is bent to provide a top 2, parallel sides 3, and a bottom 4 which is parallel to the top. The edges of the sheet are arranged upon the bottom 1 of the metallic casing 1, and one of said edges overlies the adjacent edge. The other overlying edge is provided with openings 5 which are arranged in a plane parallel to the longitudinal edge of the underlying portion of the tie, the said openings 5 being. arranged approximately central of the casing. The openings 5 register with corresponding openings 6 in the top 2 of the casing. The casing is adapted to receive a filler of plastic material 7, the said filler being securely tamped within the casing after the said casing has been formed. The registering openings 5 and 6 are arranged in pairs adjacent the ends of the tie, each pair of openings being spaced a distance exceeding the width of the base flanges of the tie, and the said base flanges are adapted to be positioned upon the tie between each pair of the registering openings. Passing through the openings 5 and 6, as
well as through the plastic body 7 of the tie are bolts 8, the heads of said bolts being arranged upon the unde-r-face of the metallic casing 1, and said heads are adapted to abut with the underlying edge of the metal casing, and to compress the said edge against the overlying edge of the casing, in a mannerwhich will presently be set forth.
The upper face 2 of the tie is preferably formed with transversely arranged elongated slots 9 which are disposed adjacentthe openings 6 of the top 2, or which may enter the said openings, as desired.
The numerals 10 designate the rail-retaining clips. These clips comprise each an angular member which has its inner portion shaped to be received within the fishing spaces upon the opposite sides of the rails.
R. The inner portion of each of the clips is enlarged to provide, what 1 will hereinafter refer to as a head 11. The outer wall of the head is inclined downwardly and outwardly, as indicated by the numeral 12. The portion of each of the clips beyond its inclined wall is centrally formed with a slot 13, which provides for the passage of the bolts 8. The underface of each of the clips, beyond its base flange engaging face is provided with a lug l'l. each of which being received within one of the openings 9 of the top 2. The upper face of the clip, beyond the beveled or inclined wall 12 is preferably inclined from its juncture with the said wall 12 to its outer edge, and the numeral 15 designates a wedge-member which is adapted to be arranged upon the said in clined upper face of'each of the clips. The wedge member is provided with an opening through which passes the bolt 8, and the inner face of said wedge member is beveled, as at 16, to correspond with. the inclined wall 12 of the clip.
The numeral 17 designates the .nuts which co-act with the bolts 8, and it will be noted that when the nuts are screwed home upon the bolts, the same will force the clip 16 tightly into engagement with the tie, the
formation of the wedge members 'eculiar tending to force the clips tightly into engagement with the base flanges of the rails R as well as to force the said clips tightly against the tie.
In Fig. 6 of the drawings, I have illustrated the clip 11 provided with upstanding flanges 18 between which the wedge'member
