Specification of Letters Patent. Patented 21,
Application filed August 25, 1 919. Serial No. 319,672.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK CHAPMAN, a.
citizen of the United States of America, re-. siding at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful'Improvements in Portable Stoves, of which the following is a specification. v I
This lnvention relates to heaters, and particularly to portable stoves of the type using alcohol or like fluid fuel, and the saidinvention has for its object the provision of means whereby a stove of this character can be manufactured'at small cost, yet prove e'ffi cient and satisfactory in use.
A further object of this invention isto provide a stove of this character having top and body portions which are separable, the
said top carrying the wick and its protect-;
ing means, and the body containing an absorbent material such as cotton waste, so
that by the removal of the top the fuel may be'poured into 'the'body of the stove without liability of spilling. Where fuel is poured into the interior of the stove through the wick, there is more or lessevaporation of the fuel if the wick is-hot and the fuel is apt to spill by reason of the fact that the wick interferes with the passage of the fuel into the stove. As in this device the top and wick are removable, the filling process may be observed, and when the filler or waste material becomes saturated the delivery of fuel can be controlled.
of construction and in the arrangement and.
combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed. a
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the, several views and in which- Figure 1 illustrates a view in elevation of .the stove embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 illustrates top plan thereof.
Fi 3 illustrates vertical section view.
Fig. 4 illustrates underneath plan view of the cover. g v In these drawings 5 denotes the body of the stove, which may comprise a boxlike structure having an annular bead or shoulder 6 which acts as a support for the cover 7 when its flange 8 engages the said shoulder.
T he body of" the stove, or what 'mighfb termed the reservoir, is preferably filledwith absorbent material 9, such as asbestos fiber or cotton waste,.or any other absorb '1 out which will'hold the fuel and prevent splashing or spilling while beingcarried, p The cover 7 has 'a' central aperture 10. through which the wick is exposed, and the wickcomprises in its construction in this embodiment of the invention, an upper layer 11 of wire gauze and a lower layer 12 of the same material, which layers 11 and 12 v,
serve to confine the wick 13, which may cong sist in a bunch of absorbent material such as is contained in the reservoir. The up-' per layer 11 of wire gauzeis convex and projects well above the upper surface'of the cover and thus provides suflicient space for the wick, which is preferably relatively large so that'it will hold a proper supply of fuel. I
The lower layer 12 of wire gauzeextends downwardly slightly from the under surface of the coverand extended to bear against the contents of the reservoir so that'the fuel will find its way to the wick by capillaryattraction and insure a proper supply of fuel.
The wire gauze surface of'11 and 12 may be secured at different places to the entire f surface of the cover by patches l lof solder or other like securing elements, and the cover and wick may be manipulated in the I manner stated for the purpose of giving access tothe interior of. the reservoir. With the foregoing and other objects in' I view, the invention consists in the details I claim-- A portable stove comprising a body having aflllerof absorbent material, such body 1 bodynear its upper edge, the edge of the flange engaging the said annular shoulder, thesaid cover having, an aperture, a wick having an annular shoulder near its upper edge, a cover having a flange embracing-the;
comprising an absorbent material and an upper and lower layer of wire gauze, the said wick projecting through the opening in the cover and being securedto the underside of the said cover.
In testimony whereof I afiix signature". I
D; E. BEARSE.
