IMPROVEMENT IN PHOTOGRAPHIC POSING-CHAIRS.

Spccication forming part of Letters Patent No. 190,485, dated October 31, 1871.

To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NELSON S. BoWDIsH, of Richfield Springs, in the county of Otsego and State of' New York, have invented an Improvementin PhotographicPosing-Chairs5 and the following is declared to be a correct description of the same.

This chair is provided With a swinging arm, attached to the metallic frame of' the chair-bottom, and carrying the head-rest, so as to dispense with the separate stands heretofore employed, and a semicircular back is constructed with a segmental support that allows the back to be placed in any desired position relatively to the front of the chair.

In the drawing, Figure lis a plan of the chair, with thc back and cushion removed. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the chair and back. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan of the semicircular back, and Fig. 4 is a side view of a nearly-straight back that may be employed in place of' the semicircular back.

The open metallic frame a forms the body of the chair, and to this the legs b b, sides c, and front d are attached, said frame being made With a vertical flan ge or rim, to which the Wood-Work is screwed. In this manner the chair is made very strong, and at the same time it can be ornamentcd to any desired extent. Beneath the frame a is an arm, e, that is attached by a screw, 2, and has a lip, 3, and clamping-screw, acting with the segment 4 of' the frame a, to hold said arm e firmly in any position into which it may be swung horizontally. At thc end of' this arm e is the socket and clamp f for the hcad-rest g, so that this arm c holds the head-rest in a very firm manner as a part of the posing-chair, there- Vby dispensing with the separate head-rest stands heretofore usually employed. I remarkthat this arm e may be made in two parts, so that it may be lengthened or shortened to bring the socket f and head-rest g nearer to or further from the person sitting in or standing near said chair. The head-rest is to be constructed in any convenient manner. I have shown a second slidetube, 5, and horizontal rod 6, secured by clamps; and this head-rest might be made to carry a movable back-rest, to take the place of the chairback. The cushion or seat la of the chair may be of any desired character. The back legs b b are extended above the frame a, and provided with metallic slides t' i. It is preferable to make these slides i a part of the frame a., or to connect them firmly. The slides 'i receive the vertical bars l I., Which are connected by a metallic segment, n, upon which rests the semicircular or segmental back fm,- and these parts are connect ed by a curved flange, o, secured to the under side of the back m, and taking beneath the edge of the segment n. By this means the chairback can be placed at any desired height from the seat, and held by the clamp-screws 16; and the back can be moved upon the segment a so as to occupy any required position relatively to the f'ront or sides of the chair. Movable arm-pieces r are provided between the upper parts ofl the back legs b and the sides c c, and these arms l' are secured by hooks on the arms passing into eyes 7 upon the parts b, and a bolt or pin at the front end of the arm passes into a hole in the top of' the front leg. By .this construction of posing-chair the arms can either be employed or removed, as desired, and the back turned around to accommodate the sitter. As an additional convenience I make a back, shovvnin Fig, 4, which may be inserted in the slides i and raised or lowered as required; and this chair-back can be used f'or leaning aga-inst While the subject is standing, or as a `support in sitting.

I claim as my invention- 1. The photographic posing-cha-ir made with a metal f'ra11'1e,av,to Which the wooden legs b, sides c, and front d are attached, as set forth.

2. The arm e, attached to the under side ofthe frame a, and carrying the adjustable head-rest, in combination with the segment 4, lip 3, and clamp, substantially as and for the purposes speciied.

3. rlhe segmental back supported by and movable upon the bars l, and segment u, in combination with the slides i, as and f'or the purposes set forth.

4. rlhe movable arms o, connected when in place by the eyes 7, and hooks to the upper parts of the back legs of the posing-chair, as and for the purposes set forth.
