EARL THOMPSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
DESK-CHAIR.
To all wk om it may concern Be it known that l, EARL THOMPSON, a citizen of the United States, residing; at the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Desk-Chairs, of which. the followinp' is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in desk chairs and the object of my invention is to provide a simple and convenient device for the said purpose. Another object of my invention is to provide a desk chair unit which is adjustable to correct the tendency of the occupant to assume an incorrect posture. Permanentdeformity is found to result from incorrect posture assumed in childhood and during the formative period of school life by reason of the inelasticity of the school seat and desk. It is desirable to combine in a desk chair unit means for adjusting the position of the desk from and toward the seat which is known the plus and minus adjustment, means for adjusting: the height of the seat so that the feet of the pupil will rest comfortably and depressing the desk in its relation to the seat to attain the proper height for use, and also to provide means for adjustably inclining the desk table to prevent eye strain and a further object of my invention is to provide a desk chair unit by which the above mentioned desired results are severally and collectively attained.
1 accomplish this object by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved desk chair.
Fig. 2 is a section of the same on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a section of the adjustable leg.
Similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
My improved desk chair unit comprises chair 1, and pedestal 2 upon which pedestal may be provided a book rack 3, or the like. On the pedestal 2 I mount two or more brackets 45 which are vertically adjustable on the pedestal and for which purpose 1 prefor to use the slot and binding stud shown in my Patent 1,199,510.
The bracket 4 supports a desk member which u'eferably comprises a bed section 5 having a desk tablet 6 secured to its inner Specification of Letters Patent. Paizgntgd App. 26, 1921,

marginal edge by a hinge 7 or the like whereby the desk tablet 6 may be inclined at any desired angle. The bed 5 may be constructed in any desired manner or form or may be omitted and the desk tablet attached directly to the bracket 4:, without departing from the spirit of my invention. Any desired means may be employed for elevating or supportingthe desk tablet 6 at the desired angle, but I prefer to use for thispur-v pose the screw 9 as hereinafter described. The desk member is adapted to be moved in and out to adjust its position horizontally to the needs of the user. I preferably use for this purpose runners formed of sheet metal strips bolted upon the bed and bracket respectively and having their freeedge sections bent over to slidably engage each other.
1n the bed 5 lprovide a screw 9 which bears against and is preferably embedded in a plate 10 on the underside of the tablet 6 and is operated by a wheel 11, or the like. The.
outer edge section or strip 12 of the tablet 6 is hung on a hinge 13 so that it will take a horizonal position, as shown in Fig. 1, as shelf when the tablet 6 is raised, the movement of the strip 12 being; limited by a cutout section 12 of the strip 12, on the underside thereof. On the bed 5 are'provided a plurality of knobs 141, 14 to serve as rests for the tablet 6 when in its depressed position.
I adjust my improved chair in'height to the needs of the user by means of screw threaded extension sections 15, 15 inserted in the legs 16, 16 of the chair 1 and provide a lock 1'7 on each of the screws 15, for locking the same in the desired position. The screws 15 are each preferably provided with balls or casters 18.
Elly device being; thus assembled may be adjusted to the height and requirements of the user by extending the screws 15 of the legs 16 and turning down the lock nuts 17. As the adjustable bed is preferably sup-' ported at one side only of the chair 1 it does not interfere with a person seating himself at the desk, and the desk may be readily moved toward or from the user by means of the slide or runners as above described. The tablet 6 may be adjusted to a horizontal position by withdrawing the screw 9 or may be adjusted to an inclined position by turning the screw 9 upward as desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is: v
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a pedestal, a bracket member on the pedestal a bed member supported on the bracket and adapted to be adjusted horizontally, a desk tablet hinged to the bed member at their inner marginal edges, whereby the desk member may be inclined, and a shelf section on the outer edge of the desk tablet and supported solely thereby in a horizontal position when the tablet is inclined.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a pedestal, a bed on the pedestal, a desk tablet hinged thereon at its inner marginal edge, a screw adapted to adjust the angle of inclination of the tablet, a shelf hinged upon the tablet at its outer edge and supported solely by the tablet in a horizontal position when the tablet is inclined.
3. In a desk chair unit, the combination and from the chair including a bracket on I the pedestal, a bed supported on the bracket, runners providing a sliding connection bctween the bracket and the bed, a hinge connection between the bed and the tablet at their inner edges, a screw for positioning the tablet in an inclined position to' the bed and a shelf supported solely by the tablet at its outer marginal edge and adapted to assume a horizontal position when the tab let is inclined.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 15th day of December 1917.
. EARL THOMPSON. \Vitnesses HARRY J. NEUsoHArER, W. F. ASHLEY.
