BOW BEST AND CLAMPING DEVICE.
To all "whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY B. WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Bow Best and Clamping Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for supporting and clamping the bows of a vehicle top in a folded position.-
"The object of my invention is, to provide an improved bow rest and clamping device which may be-read'ily attached to a vehicle and which maybe adjusted for folding tops of various sizes.
A further object is to provide a simple,
inexpensive and eflicient device of the character referred to.
With these objectszin view the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, itbeing understood that various changes. in the form, proportions, size and minor details of construction. may be made within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
In the drawings the numeral 1 indicates a channel member which is provided with the upper and lower walls 2 and 3 respectively, and with the socket 4:. said socket being preferably split as best illustrated in Fig. 2 and provided with a clamping screw 5, the socket being adapted to receive the extremity of the usual bracket provided upon the bodies of automobiles and similar vehicles, the screw 5 being for the purpose of retaining the bow rest upon said bracket.

The lower extremity of the channel member 1 is provided with a horizontal arm 6, preferably formed integral therewith, a concaved rest 7 being formed upon said arm, said rest being coveredwith a pad 8 of leather or similar material which may be attached thereto, as by rivets. 9, thus forming a rest upon which the lowermost bow of the top will be located when the top is in the folded. position. 5
.Vertically disposed apertures 10 and 11 are provided in the upper and. lower walls 2 and 3 respectively of the channel member 1, and the. clamping rod 12 is slidably mounted through said apertures. The, upper end of the rod is. preferably. bent or curved outwardly to form a clamping mem ber 13, the inner surface of which is pro vided with a pad 14 of the usual form of construction.
The lower extremity of the rod; 12- is screw threaded asindicated at 15, an internally screw threadedcollar 16 being provided upon said screw threaded portion of the rod and adapted to contact with the upper surface of the lower wall 3 of the channel member. A wing nut 17 is provided upon the lower extremity of the rod 12 and interposed between said wing nut and the wall 3 of the channel member is located a resilient member 18, preferably in the form of a split spring washer. The vibration of the car would ordinarily tend to cause the wing nut 17 to work loose upon the screw threaded portion of the rod 12 and in order to prevent this the split spring washer 18 is provided between the wing nut and the lower wall of the channel member as above mentioned.
In Fig. 5 is illustrated a slightly diflerent form of clamping member, the upper end of the clamping rod 12 being preferably bent outwardly to form a horizontal arm 19 on which is adjustably mounted the clamp 21. This clamp preferably comprises a collar which is mounted in any suitable manner for rotation upon the arm 19, and the curved plate 20 formed integral therewith and arranged in an inverted position. A pad 22 of leather or equivalent material is provided upon the inner curved face of the clamp.
I claim:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a channel shaped supporting member having a rest arranged to support the bows of a vehicle, a rod slidably mounted within said channel shaped member and provided with a clamp arranged to cooperate with the rest to support the bows, upper and lower end walls provided upon said channel shaped member and arranged to support said rod adjacent its upper and;
lower ends, an adjusting collar carried by said rod and located withln said channel and a clamping device mounted upon said rod and arranged to cooperate with the collar to draw the rod downwardly and tightly secure it to the channel member.
2; In a device of the character described, the combination of a channel shaped supporting member having a rest arranged to support the bows of a vehicle, a rod slidably mounted within said channel shaped member and provided with a clamp arranged .to cooperate with the rest to support the bows, upper and lower end walls provided upon said channel shaped member and arranged to support said rod adjacent its upper and lower ends, and a nutupon said rod below the lower wall and adapted to draw said rod downwardly and securely clamp the bows between said clamp and said rest. 7
3. In a device of thecharacter set forth,
' the combination of an elongated stock having a vertical passage therethrough with bearings at the upper and loWerend-portions thereof, said stock having body-attaching means and having, also, a laterally projecting bow-support at its lower end-portion, a rod slidably housed in said stock and having a projecting upper end equipped with a laterally-projecting bow-clamp, and an adjusting nut-on the lower end of said rod engaging the bearing at the lower end of said stock, said nut being accessible below the plane of said bow-support and adapted to draw said rod downwardly and clam-p the bows between said bow-clamp and bow-support. i
4:. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of an elongated stockhaving a vertical passage therethrough, with bearings at the upper and lower end-portions thereof, said stock having its upper portion equipped with bodyattaching means and having its lower portion equipped with a laterally-projecting bow-support, a rod slidable in said stock having its upper end equipped with a laterally-projecting bowclamp, and an adjusting nut on the lower end of saidrod disposed below the lower end of said stock and engaging the bearing thereat. said nut being located below the plane of said bow-support and accessible beneath said stock and adapted to draw said rod downwardly and clamp the bows between said bow-clamp and bow-support.
