WILLIAM N. ROBERTS AND HENRY B. MATHEWS, OF ANSONIA, OHIO.
LAMP OR LANTERN HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1907.
Application filed July 13,1906. Serial Ila-326,155.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM N. ROBERTS and HENRY B. ll/IATHEWS, citizens of the United States, residing at Ansonia, in the county of Darke and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp or Lantern Holders, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
The object of our invention is to provide an improved lamp or lantern holder designed for use in connection with that type of lantern, which has heretofore been usually carried by the dash board of a buggy or other vehicle, and which by means of our improved lantern holder, may be carried at the upper front corner of the carriage top, where it will throw a maximum of light in front of the horse and with a minimum of shadow. @For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the lantern in dotted lines and supported at the upper left hand corner of the top of a vehicle, the holder being shown in full lines as are also a portion of the side brace of the vehicle top and the corner post to which the side brace is secured at one end; Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view on a reduced scale illustrating our improved lantern holder and its socket piece shown detached from each other and in juxtaposition.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Refeiring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates the upper side brace of a buggy or similar vehicle, and 2 designates the post on which one end of the brace 1 is held, by means of the ordinary nut 3.
shaped, as shown, and is provided at one end with a preferably flattened eye 5 by which it may be inserted over the end of the post 2 and be clamped thereon by the nut 3. The arm 4 extends downwardly from its eye and thence upwardly around and over the outer side of the nut and is provided at its free end with an outstanding and laterally extending portion 6 to which a head '7 is secured by means of a screw threaded engagement. The head. 7 is intended to be received in a downwardly facing socket on one side of the lantern S, and clamp in said socket by means which of themselves do not form any part of the present invention, being described and claimed in our allowed application for Letters Patent of the United States, No. 304,560, file on or about March 6, 1906.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that we have provided a lantern supporting arm which is formed at one end with an eye that is received on the post 2 being preferably interposed between the end of the side brace 1 which is also received on said post and the nut 3 which is screwed on the end of the post and clamps the arm thereon as Well as serving as a means for securely holding the side brace 1. It is this main feature of the arm which is the essential element of our present improvement in lantern holders of this type and it will be seen that by means of this element, the holder may be readily attached to and detached from the top of the buggy or similar vehicle so as to hold the lantern in an advantageous position for night driving.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is:
