To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, PETER JOSEPH SAVAGE, a subject of the-King of England, and resident of New York, county of New York,

and State of New York, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in-Leggings, of which the following is a specifica tion.

This invention relates to leggings of the character adapted to be worn over the nether extremities of breeches and the tops of shoes.

The invention has for its objects to provide a comfortable and efiicient, self-conforming device of this character which embodies both flexibility and elasticity, means for securely attaching it to the leg of a wearer, and means for maintaining the uppers of laced shoes in closed and securely fitted condition in the event of breakage of their laces. A further object is to provide means for fastening the legging comprising a hook adapted for ready attachment to the legging without the aid of stitching.

In carrying out my invention I employ an elongated strip composed of elastic webbing, and a section of non-elastic webbing, and novel hook means for fastening the legging, all as hereinafter fully described and specifically set forth in the annexed claim.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is an inside view of my improved legging. Fig. 2, a similar view drawn on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3, an edge view. Fig. 4:, a face view of a hook forming part of my invention. Fig. 5, an edge view of said hook; and Fig. 6 is a figure representation of a uniformed man wearing my improved leggings.

In the example of my invention illustrated in the drawings, A, indicates an elongated strip, or band of elastic webbing of any suitable length adapted to be coiled around the leg of a wearer. B, indicates a relatively short strip of flexible, non-elastic webbing which is secured by stitching to the lower end of the elastic strip A.

The strip A, is reinforced by fold a, at its upper end part which is secured by means of stitching 1; and the strap B, is stitched to the band A, overlaps the same and is fastened thereto by means of rows of stitching b. The free end of the strap B, is reinforced by a folded and stitched part 0.

As a fastening means for securing the legging I employ a sheet metal device D, comprising the shank 2, eye 3 and hook 4.

This device is adapted for attachment at either end of the legging and is susceptible of being fixedin place by the simple method of extending it through eyelets E, of the ends of the legging, and fixing it by bendmg, as illustrated by Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings.

It is noteworthy that the device D, may be employed alternately as a hook for engagement with one of the upper eyelets of a laced shoe; by means of its hook 4:, and with a shoe lace hook, of the common variety, by

means of its eye 3. When it is desired to employ the device D, for engaging a shoe eyelet it is placed with the hook extended, as shown in the drawings; and when it is re quired for use as a means for connection with a shoe lace hook it may be placed with the eye 3, extended by engaging the hook 4 with an eyelet E. The device D, is also employed for fastening the free end of the band A, to its body part by means of its hook 4:, as indicated in Fig. 6 of the drawings.

To engage the fastening hooks eyelets F, are fastened to the upper part of the strip A, and held in place by means of the non-elastic reinforcing strips F, located one on each face of the strip A.

The devices D, are interchangeable and readily attachable and removable, while at the same time they are susceptible ofbeing securely fixed to the legging without necessity of using any stitching or auxiliary fastening means; it is simply necessary to bend their shanks into engagement with the eyelets E. y

In the operation and use of the invention the lower end of the strip B, is secured to the inside flap of the shoe upper by means of a fastening device D, the eye 3, engaging a shoe lace hook when the shoe is provided with hooks, and the hook 4E, engaging an eyelet when hooks are not provided on the shoe. Then the strap B, is tightly wound around the top part of the shoe, which fastens the shoe irrespective of whether its laces are broken or not. The remaining, or major portion of the legging is then wound around the leg of a wearer in a spiral coil, and over and around the end of the breeches, the strip A, being wound on itself and secured by means of the hook 4:, of a fastening device, said hook engaging one of the eyelets F, as shown by Fig. 6 of the drawings. Thus I provide a snugly fitting, comfortable and securely fastened legging which allows for free movement of the muscles while at the same time presenting a. neat appearance.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let- 5 ters Patent, is:

In a legging, the combination of a lower end section of non-elastic webbing, an upper end section embodying an elongated strip of elastic webbing, said sections respectively 10 provided with a folded free end part, a hook attached to each of said free end parts, oppositely located reinforcing strips of non-elastic material fastened to the upper part of said elastic strip and a plurality of eyelets fastened through said reinforcing 15 strips.
