UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES SUNDQUIST, OF GHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN INVALID ROCKING-CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,582. dated J uno 17, 1879; application filed November 11, 1878.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES SUND UIsT, of Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton, and in the State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rockin g-Ohairs; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the.
construction and arrangement of areclining rocking-chair, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my improved reclining rocking-chair. Fig. 2 is a bottom View of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section thereof, and Fig. 4 is a detailed section of the side of the chair.
A represents the seat-frame of my chair, connected to and supported by rockers B, of any ordinary construction.
To the rear edge of the frame A is hinged the back B, which is sustained partially and thrown forward by means of a flat spring, (J, fastened to the rear of the seat-frame, and bearing against the lower cross-bar of the back B.
To each side of the back B is pivoted a curved armrest, D, the forward end of which has a thumb-screw, a, passing through it..
Each thumb-screw a passes through a slot, as, in the side of the seat-frame A, and enters a sliding block or nut, I), placed in a groove or recess on the inner side of said seat-frame. By these means the back B can be adjusted and held at any angle by firmly fastening the forward ends of the arms D D to the seatframe by means of the screws a a.
Below the slot at in the side of the seatframe is a slot, y, extending the entire length of said side, and corresponding with a groove on the inner side thereof. In these grooves is placed a cross-bar, F, which can be moved forward or backward, as required, and held in position bymeans of a thumbscrew, p, at one end.
To the cross-bar F is hinged a frame, G,
provided with an upholstered panel, H, which is hinged at its forward end, and its rear end held at any elevation desired by means of a pawl, d, pivoted to the under side of the panel, and taking into notches e c in a bar of the frame G. The upholstered panel H can thus be adjusted to form, as it were, a continuation of the seat of the chair. The forward end of the frame G is provided with short legs I I, with a railing, f, above the frame for a footrest. Near this end, to the under side of said frame, are hinged two longer legs, J J, connected by a round, h, which legs may be thrown down, and thus bring the frame G to a nearly-horizontal position, whereby the chair may be transformed into a lounge when desired.
The legs I and J are all provided with rollers i, so that in whatever position the footrest frame may be arranged the occupant of the chair can rock back and forth, if desired.
The cross-bar F, with the frame G, can be moved backward and forward, 'as required. When moved entirely back the railing f forms an ordinary foot-rcst.
The legs J are held in either position, either folded or thrown down, by means of buttons m or other suitable devices of similar nature.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the rocking seatframe A, with slots a: m in its sides, the hinged back B, spring 0, and pivoted arms D I), with the thumb-screws a and sliding mus I), substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. In combination with the rocking-chair frame A B, the sliding cross-bar F, hinged frame G, legs I, provided with rollers, and railingf, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. i
3. In combination with a rocking-chair, the adjustable foot-rest frame G, provided with the adjustable panel H, stationary legs I, and folding legs J, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 10th day of June, 1878. K
CHARLES SUNDQUIST. [L. 8.]
