To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN HUBMANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Combination Drum and Cymbal Beater, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to an improved combination drum and cymbal beater and the invention has for its object the provision of a contrivance of this character by which drummer seated can play a bass drum and cymbal with one foot, leaving his hands free to play a snare drum or other effects or instruments necessary for an up to date trap drummer.

A. further object of the invention is to provide an improved drum and cymbal beater which comprises a novel arrangement of actuating parts connected to a foot pedal in such a manner as to permit accurate timing of the beating of the drum and cymbal and cause the two to strike at the same time, fast or slow, loud or soft, according to signs of music, as well as adjustment of the parts for use on drums of various sizes and depths, and difierent relative positions of the cymbal and drum and the tension required for moving the parts to inoperative positions.

Vi ith the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the peculiar combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed, it being also an object to provide a device which is simple in construction, durable and efficient in operation and not likely to get out of working order.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bass drum equipped with an improved combination drum and cymbal beater; Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof, Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of a clamp for pivotally mounting the swinging ball rod on the bass drum hoop at the top thereof, taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. l is a detail view of the adjustable cymbal striker clamp and striker engaged therethrough, taken on the line l4c of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a detail view of a clamp and holder for supporting the cymbal.

In carrying my invention into practice there is illustrated a bass drum 10 of the usual or any preferred construction having heads 11 constituting sounding members, a cylindrical shell 12 at the edges of which hoops 13 are disposed, while rods 1% connect the outer edges of the hoops and sustain the shell for the purpose of tightening the heads thereon in the usual manner. Attached to one of the hoops at the upper portion thereof is a clamp 15, the same consisting of an upper rectilinear jaw 16 which terminates in spaced apertured ears 1.7 which are interiorly threaded for engagement by pivot screws 18 havin conical or tapered ends 19 projecting inwardly. Depending from the upper jaw 16 is a stem 20 having a rectangular or squared portion adjacent to the jaw and being threaded at its free end. Engaged on this stem is a lower jaw 21, the same being recessed on its inner face, as shown at 22, to accommodate the edge of one hoop and being held a ainst rotation on the squared portion of the stem and further held from displacement as by means of a wing nut 23 engaged on the threaded portion of the stem.

A swinging ball rod 2a is pivotally supported in the clamp 15 and for this purpose a barrel 25 of cylindrical form having conical seats 26 in its ends on a line of its axial center is provided to fit between the spaced ears 1? and to receive the extremities or bearing ends of the pivot screws so that the latter may be tightened in case of wear to insure proper pivotal movement of the swinging ball rod. The barrel is also provided with a vertical opening 27 at right angles to its axial center, through rhich the swinging ball rod 24 extends, and said rod is provided with a flattened portion 28 adapted to be engaged by a set screw 29 operating through a threaded aperture in the barrel at right angles to the vertical aperture 27 so as to hold the rod against vertical displacement in the barrel as well as from rotation in its support.

It will be observed that the rod 2 extends but a short distance above the pivot support formed by the clamp and barrel carried thereby but is adapted for adjustment to vary the leverage of the free end of the rod so that the time at which the felt beater ball 30 will strike the drum head may be regulated as well as the force of the blow, and the felt beater ball adjusted to strike the drum head in the center or other position desired so that the device is adapted for bass drums of different sizes and may be supported on the drum hoop without marring the same, and at the same time holding tight without use of rivets, bolts or screws to penetrate the hoop or require any special remodeling thereof. Also adjustably mounted on the rod 24 above the pivot point thereof is a collar 31 which has a set screw 32 operating therethrough to engage the rod and hold the collar in adjusted position, while projecting from the opposite side of the collar is an apertured ear or ring 33. A retractile spring 34 is provided with hooks 35 anchored at its ends by restricting the coils thereof and one hook is engaged in the ring 33 while the other hook is engaged in a chain 36, the opposite end of the chain engaging one bill of a double or S-shaped hook 37, one portion of which engages the hoop at the opposite side of the drum with respect to the hoop to which the clamp 15 is fastened and directly in rear thereof. A portion of the hook with which the chain engages is of reduced width to permit it to pass through the links of the chain and in this manner permit the length of the chain to be varied to adjust the tension of the spring and its tendency to draw the beater ball away from the drum head and the precision with which the movements of the rod in causing the beater ball to strike or move away from the drum head is effected.

The heater ball 30 is formed of compressed felt and is slipped on the rod 24 so as to fit tightly thereon near its lower end, which end of the rod has an arm 38 fixed thereto to project away from the drum, said arm in turn having an aperture 39 in its free end. In order to actuate the beater ball to beat the drum and strike the cymbal, the mounting of which will be hereinafter more fully described, a base or bottom board 40 is provided to rest upon the floor adjacent to the drum, and this bottom board has a heel piece 41 provided with a substantially semi-circular rim 42 at the back portion to prevent displacement of the heel. Hinged to the bottom board at a spaced distance in front of the heel piece is a foot piece or pedal 43 having an apertured angular bracket 44 secured to its under surface and projecting in front of the tip or toe portion thereof. An adjustable connection is arranged between the arm 38 and the pedal 43, such connection consisting of a strap 45, or other flexible connection, which passes through the aperture of the bracket 44 and which has a series of apertures 46 therethrough at spaced points adapted to be engaged by a hook 47 secured to one end of the strap and preferably comprising a single section of wire bent to form the hook and in an opposite direction to form an eye 48 which attaches to said end of the strap. In this manner the adjustment of the hook 47 in the apertures will serve to regulate the, length of the connection and the throw or degree of movement of the pedal in actuating the parts, or depending upon the size of the drum.

The connection between the pedal and the beater rod is efiected and rendered detachable by means of a snap hook 49 which is secured to the upper end of the strap and which engages the aperture 39 of the arm 38. The bottom board is held from move- -ment with res Ject to the drum so as to prevent displacement of the foot therefrom, by attaching means at the forward end of the bottom board consisting of a transverse block 50 pivoted by means of links 51 to the opposite edges of the bottom board and in turn carrying a clamp 52 consisting of an angular bracket with an engaging screw 53 operating vertically through its free end to engage the inner face of the drum hoop diametrically beneath the clamp 15. In this manner, by depressing the pedal the beater ball will be carried toward the drum head due to the inclined disposition of the connection 45, when the rod 24 will move on its pivot so as to expand the spring 34 which, upon pressure being released from the pedal, will serve to swing the rod in an opposite direction and move the ball away from the drum. To simultaneously actuate the cymbal with the beating of the drum and at the same time permit the best resounding of the tones produced by the striking of the cymbal, a clamp 54 is engaged on the hoop to which the clamp 15 is attached at a 56 of a co-acting recessed jaw 57, while the threaded end of the shank is engaged by a wing nut 58 so as to clamp thejaws together to fasten the device to the drum hoop. Integral with the angular jaw 55 and disposed at an angle or inclination to the planes of the co-acting faces of the jaws, is a sleeve 59 which has a rectangular opening for slidably receiving an adjustable cymbal holder 60 which is of corresponding cross section. This holder is capable of adjustment in the sleeve so as to dispose the cymbal in the proper position on the drum, by means of a set screw 61 operating through the sleeve to frictionally engage on the face of the holder. The free end of the adjustable cymbal holder is offset or bent rearwardly and carries a forwardly extending screw shank 62 which carries a washer 63 having a suitable felt piece against which the cymbal 64 is fitted on being passed on to the shank, while a wing nut 65 engaged on the shank holds the cymbal in position, together with an intermediate washer preferably of leather, to prevent marring of the surface of the cymbal as well as to insure the proper tone.

It will be seen that the cymbal is held in a position slightly projected from the periphery of the drum and to extend in a position slightly spaced from the rod 2e above the beater ball 30, and in order to play the cymbal a cymbal striker 66 is provided, the

same consisting of a rod offset upwardly and having a spherical enlargement 67 of metal at its free end while the inner portion is flattened as shown at 68. A clamp 69 having a vertical aperture is fitted on the rod 2% above the beater ball and by disposing the flat side of the cymbal striker 66 toward the rod in an aperture transversely through the clamp communicating with the vertical aperture which receives the rod, the striker can be adjusted to contact with the cymbal at the proper point by means of a set screw 70 and at the same time the clamp will be positively held against movement or from turning on the rod, and this is essential since the leverage produced by the projection of the striker is such as to tend to turn the clamp on the rod with considerable force. Also, by means of the adjustment of the striker and the holder, cymbals of various sizes may be used and the simplicity of the attaching means permits a change to be quickly effected.

When the bottom board or base is attached to the hoop of the drum in the manner heretofore described, it is necessary to support the drum at the back and to steady it, and this is accomplished by supporting legs 71 having clamps 72 for securing them to the drum hoop at the back in such a manner as to cause the legs to be inclined out *ard and downward so as to hold the drum in an upright position. The ends of the legs are tapered so as to project into a floor to prevent movement of the drum, and by reason of the small contact of the floor the tone of the drum is not impaired. For loud beating the drum is tilted back little, the bottom board is shifted in the opposite direction so as to dispose the beater ball at a greater distance from the drum head and cause it to strike with harder force than ordinarily, the links 51 permitting movement of the drum independent of the bottom board or base, and also permitting the drum to be tilted forwardly for soft beating by disposing the beater ball in closer proximity to the drum head. i Vhen finished playing the drummer unsnaps the spring hook 49 from the arm 38 and folds the foot piece upwardly against the drum and fastens the same by means of a hook 78 to the arm 38 of the rod 24 thus causing the rod to move toward the drum by expanding the spring 3% or by detaching the hook 37 from the opposite hoop of the drum. The advantage of the connection between the upper end of the rod 24 and the opposite hoop relative to that to which the rod is pivoted is that the old fashioned telescoping rod and other similar devices are dispensed with in such a manner as to simplify and lighten the structure and render the adjustment such that by means of the chain the device can be attached to any size drum within a reasonable degree irrespective of the depth of the drum, and at the same time adjust the tension of the spring 34. Having thus described my invention, what- I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A combined drum and cymbal beater, comprising a rod, means to pivotally support the rod on the hoop of a drum, a heater ball carried by the rod, a hook for engagement with the other hoop of the drum in rear of said pivot means, a chain adjustably engageable with the hook, a retractile spring between the chain and rod and connected thereto, adjustment of the length of the chain serving to adjust the tension, of the spring, and actuating means connected with the rod for causing the beater ball to strike the drum against the action of the spring.

2. A. combined drum and cymbal beater, comprising a rod, a clamp to pivot-ally support the rod on the hoop of a drum, a beater ball carried by the rod, a hook for engagement with the other hoop of the drum in rear of said clamp, a chain adjustably engageable with the hook, a retractile spring between the chain and rod and connected thereto, said spring being connected to the rod for adjustment vertically on the rod, said chain permitting adjustment of the tension of the spring by cooperation with the hook, and a pedal having a connection with the rod for moving the same on its pivot to strike the drum, said spring automatically shifting the beater ball away from the drum. 8. A combined drum and cymbal beater, comprising a rod, a clamp to pivotally support the rod on the hoop of a drum, a beater ball carried by the rod, a hook for engagement with the other hoop of the drum in rear of said clamp, a chain adjusta'laly engageable with the hook, a retractile spring between the chain and rod and connected thereto, a clamp adapted to enga e the hoop of the drum at a point slightly above the center of the lat er, a holder horizontally adjustable in said clamp, a cymbal removably c1 ied by the free end of the holder, a clamp slidably mounted on the rod above the beater ball and having a transverse aperture communicating with the rod, a striker comprising a rod havin an offset portion terminating in an enlargement for engagement with the cymbal and having a flattened portion contacting with the rod, said striker being adjustable through the transverse aperture, a set screw operating through the clamp to hold the clamp against movement on the rod and simultaneously hold the striker in adjusted position and against rotation, and a pedal connected tothe rod outwardly of the ball for simultaneously beating the drum and striking the cymbal.

4:. The combination with a bass drum and means for holding the drum in an upright position at the lower portion of one hoop; of a pivoted rod having a beater, means for holding the beater away from the drum, a cymbal suitably supported, a striker carried by the rod and cooperating with the cymbal, a base, a pivoted connection between the base and the other hoop of the drum at the bottom portion of the latter, a pivoted pedal on the base, connection between the rod and pedal whereby depression of the pedal will cause the striking of the cymbal and the beating of the drum by movement of the rod on its pivot, said base together with its pedal being adapted to be folded toward the drum, and means carried by the base for engagement with the rod to hold said parts in a collapsed position toward the drum.

5. The combination with a bass drum and means for holding the drum in an upright position at the lower portion of one hoop; of a pivoted rod having a beater, means for holding the beater away from the drum, a cymbal suitably supported, a striker carried by the rod and cooperating with the cymbal, a base, a pivotedconnection between the base and the other hoop of the drum at the bottom portion of the latter, a pivoted pedal on the base, an arm at the lower end of the rod having an aperture, said arm projecting outwardly beyond the beater, and a removable and adjustable connection between the pedal and arm, said connection embodying a strap, an apertured member fixed to the pedal, said strap passing through said opertured member and having a series of perforations, a hook at one end of the strap for engagement within one of the apertures, and means on the other end of the strap for detachable engagement with the apertured arm.

6. The combination with a bass drum and a rod removably pivoted at one side thereof a and having a beating member; of means for holding the rod with its beating member away from the drum, a cymbal also carried by the drum, a striker carried by the rod to engage the cymbal, legs connected to the drum at the lower part of the opposite sides thereof, a bottom part extending at right angles from the front portion of the drum and having a heel piece, a block pivotally connected to the bottom board and adapted to support the drum thereon at its front edge, a clamp carried by the block to secure the drum thereto and permit pivotal movement of the drum with respect to the bottom board, and a pivoted pedal carried by the bottom board and connected to the rod for actuating the latter, movement of the drum independent of the bottom board serving to regulate the force of the blow struck by the beater and striker against the drum and cymbal.

7. In a combination drum and cymbal beater, the combination with a bass drum having the usual hoops and means to support the drum in an upright position from said hoops; of a clamp embodying jaws adapted to receive one of the hoops near the upper part thereof, one jaw having spaced apertured ears provided with interior threads, a barrel having end recesses, pivots engaged in the threaded apertures and with the barrel topivotally support the latter, a single rod carried by the barrel for vertical adjustment and extending above and below the same, an adjustable resilient connection between the upper portion of the rod and the other hoop, said connection embodying an S-shaped hook engaged over said hoop, a clamp vertically adjustable on the rod and a spring and flexible member connected to each other, said spring being connected to the clamp and the flexible member being adjustably connected to the hoop to vary the tension of the spring, a felt beater ball carried by the rod near its lower end, said connection disposing said rod in an outwardly inclined position, and a pivoted depression member having connection with the rod in an oppositely inclined direction to cause the rod to move von its pivot for striking the drum with the ball,
