Be it known that I, Vi ILLIAM F. LunwIG,

- a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drum and Cymbal Playing Apparatus, of which the following is a speci iication.

My invention relates to improvements in means for playing bass drums and cymbals and has for its object to )rovide a simple and efficient device of this clraractcr which may be attached to-a drum and so arranged as to operate drum and cymbal beaters by means of a hinged pedal.

A further object of my invention is toconnect the drum and cymbal beaters with the operating edal in a direct and positive man ner in or( er that the power may be transmitted instantaneously.

A further object of my invention is to provide a novel and efficient cl .mping means whereby the device may be readily attached to and detached from a drum. And a further object is to provide suitable vertical adjusting neans for the drum and cymbal heaters.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

With these objects in view my invention consists in certain details of construction and arrangement of parts all as will be hereinafter fully set forthand particularly pointed out inthe appended claims. I My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,

el'erring now to the drawings 1 indicates the shell of a drum, 2 the drum hoop, and 3 the drum head. The clamping device for securing the playing apparatus to the drum comprises jaws 4- integral with andprojecting from the base 5 in which a pair of parallel vertical rectangular tubular standards 6 are secured. In the slotted portion 7 of-the base 5is pivoted a bell-crank 8 by means of the rivet 9,said bell-crank being adapted to engage the outer'cdgc of the drum hoop. 'l he base 5 is tapped to receive an ave-screw 10 which extends into the slot of the base 5. A member 11 provided with a hook 12 is also tapped to receive the eye screw 10, which forms the only means of support for said member.

To clamp the playing apparatus to the drum, the drum hoo is placed between the bell-crank S and the book 12 onto the jaws 4 when the eye-screw 10 may be turned to draw the drumhoop against said bell-crank. it will be seen that one arm of the bcll-crank engages an edge of the drum hoop and that the other engages a side thereof, thus securing the hoop positively. The pedal 13 is pivoted at 16 to the pedal base 1'4 and is inclined upwardly toward the drum head 3 to meet a. chain 17 which is arranged adjacent said drum head and connects with the grooved periphery of the segment 18 integral with the shaft *9. The shaft 19 is rotatably mounted in members 20 having rectangularportions adapted to slide in the tubular standards '6 and to be secured in any adjusted position therein bv means of bolts 21. adapted to pass through perforations 2 provided in said members.

The drum beater arm 23 is rigidly secured in a radially extending lug integral with the shaft 19, and the cymbal beater arm 24 is disposed at right angles to said drum beater arm and adjustably secured thereto by means of the clamp 25. The drum beater arm 23 is maintained in the normal horizontal or dotted line position by means of a wire spring 26 coiled around the shaft 19 having a U-shaped portion engaging the under side of the lug carrying said drum beater arm and bent ends engaging the members 20.

The cymbal bracket 27 is clamped to the drum hoop 2 by means of a suitable clamp 28 and comprises an elongated slotted portion 29 by means of which and the bolt 30 the cymbal 31 may be laterally adjusted. A flexible radially extending arm 32 is secured to the cymbal-bracket 27 by means of the bolt 30 and is provided with a cushion of felt or other suitable material at its outer extremity, said felt being adapted to engage cord connection. between the latter arm and the arm 32 being provided. This device acts as a muffler, it being obvious that the cymbal is free to vibrate except for the moment when the cord 33 is under tension, causing the arm 32 to assume the dotted line position.

While I have shown what I deem to be the preferable form of my invention, I do not Wish to be limited thereto, as there might be many changes made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention. And while have designed this apparatus for a particular use, it may be used for any purpose for which it is adapted.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a device of the class described, the combination with abass drum, a clamping device adapted to securely engage the drum hoop, a pair of vertically disposed rectangular tubular standards secured to the base of said clamping device, vertically adjustable means secured in said standards carrying a horizontally disposed shaft journaled therein, a peripherally grooved segment and a drum beater arm extending at right angles to said shaft, an eve-screw )rovided in said base, a pedal base having a book adapted to engage the eye of said eye-screw, a-pedal pivoted to said pedalbase, and a chain connecting the periphery of said segment with the free end ofsaid pedal, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

In a device of the class described, a bass drum and a cymbal connected thereto by means of a bracket, a clamping device adapted to engagethe drum hoop, an eye-screw provided inthe base of said clamping device, a pedal base having a hoolt adapted to enthe eye of said eye-screw, a pedal inclined upwardly toward the driun pivoted to said pedal base, tubular standards sup )orted by said clamping device having vertica ly adjustable members mounted therein, a horizontally disposed shaft journaled in said members, a peripherally grooved segment integral with said shaft to which a chain is con- 'nected, said chain being connected to the end of said pedal adjacent the drum, a lug in said shaft carrying a drum beater arm, and a cymbal beater arm disposed at right angles to said drum beater arm and adjustably connected thereto by means of a clamp, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

3.v In a device of the class described, a bass drum and a clamping device comprising a base having a slotted )ortion, tubular standards I mounted on said ase,-a bell-crank adapted to engage the drum hoop ivoted in said slotted portion, jaws in said ase adapted to engage the drum hoop, an eye-screw mounted in said base and extending into the slot of said base, and a member tapped to receive said eye-screw with a'hook for pressing the drum hoop against said bell-crank and said jaws, substantially and for the purposes specified.

l. In a device of the class described, a bass drum and a bracket secured thereto having a slotted portion, a cymbal adjustably secured to said bracket by means of said slotted portion and a bolt, a flexible arm secured to said bracket by means of said bolt, a cushion of felt or other soft material secured to said arm adj accnt the periphery of said cymbal, and means for drawing said felt into engagement with the periphery of said cymbal for neutralizing vibrations thereof, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

5. In a device of the class described, 'a.

drum and a clamping device adapted to be rigidly connected thereto, a pair of rectangular tubular standards mounted on the base of said clamping device, vertically adjustable rcctz'ingular members mo untcd in said standards, a horizontally disposed shaft journaled .in said members, a wire spring coiled about said shaft, and a drum beater arm lug extending from said shaft adapted to be maintained in a normal horizontal position by means of said spring, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

6. A drum in combination with a playing apparatus attached thereto comprising a drum clamping device and a pedal base in connection therewith, vertically adjustable supports extending upwardly from said base a shaft rotatablymounted in said supports, a

segment arranged on the drum side of said shaft, a pedal pivotally mounted at one end to saidbase, a chain-at the other cndol' saidpedal and connected with the periphery of said segment, a cymbal connected to said drum and a muffler therefor, a. drum beater arm extending from said shaft, a cymbal beater arm adjustably mounted on said drum beater arm, and a flexible connection bc' tween saidcymbal beater arm and said mufiier, substantially as described.
