To all whomc't may concern Be it known that I, MARTIN RUnLorr, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residingat Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Pockets; and I do hereby. declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others Skilled in the art to which it. appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to pockets for mens garments and more particularly to pockets suitable for use in coats and trousers, the prime object being to provide a pocket con-- struction which will battle the ordinary pickpocket and which will require special manipulation for abstracting objects from the pocket, although readily permitting their insertion.

Another object is to provide simple means for readily manipulating the safety pocket construction of my invention to facilitate the removal of objects carried in the pocket.

Still another object is to provide a guard formation which will readily permit the insertion of objects into the pocket, but which will prevent their ready removal.

I accomplish these objects by the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure -1- is a side elevation of a coat equipped with my invention. Fig. -2- is an enlarged fragmentary section through the coat of Fig. 1 along the lines 2-2. Fig. 3- is an enlarged view of the lower portion of Fig. -2- and of a portion of a hand manipulating the same. Fig. l is a fragmentary sectional view of another embodiment of my invention. Fig. -5 is a horizontal section through Fig. 4- along the line 5-5. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view of a trousers pocket showing another embodiment of my invention.

In carrying out my invention, I equip the garment with a composite pocket construction consisting essentially of a main pocket having an upper entrance opening and of an auxiliary pocket disposed near the lower end of the said main pocket, the main pocket being provided at or near its lower end with a normally elosed aperture which may be opened to permit objects to pass from the main pocket to the auxiliary pocket. The arrangement of the associated pockets, of the aperture or intermediary opening leading from one to the other, and of the means for opening the said aperture may all be varied greatly with substantially equal facility, as shown in Figs. 2, 4 and 6 respectively. In the construction of Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the coat 1 is eqi'lipped with a composite pocket construction consisting of an upper pocket 2 to which access is had through an entrance opening 3, and which upper pocket has its inner wall formed sub* stantially continuous with the lining of an auxiliary pocket 5 disposed in the coat at some distance below the said main pocket 2,.the auxiliary pocket 5 having an entrance 6 nomally closed by a flap 7 and disposed intermediate of the lower end of the pocket 5 and the said entrance opening 3. The main pocket 2 projects at its lower end into the interior of the auxiliary pocket 5, and has its front and rear walls 8 and 9 equipped with resilient members 10 adapted normally to draw the said lower end portions of the pocket together, as in Fig. --2, so as to effectively close the said lower end of the pocket. By flexing the said members 10 so as to spread the same apart and thereby separate the said lower wall portions of the pocket 2, the latter may be opened so as to permit its contents to fall into the auxiliary pocket 5. To effect such an opening of the normally closed aperture connecting the associated pockets, one of the walls of the pocket 2 may be continued farther into the auxiliary pocket 5 than the other, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the respective lower end portions of the pocket may readily be manipulated by the fingers of a hand inserted through the entrance 6 of the lower pocket, as shown in Fig. -3. Or, the flexible members 10 may be formed in the shape of a flattened elastic hoop secured to the lower end of the pocket 2, as shown in Figs. i c-- and 5-, in which case the said hoop may be expanded by grasping the edge portions thereof as shown in dotted lines in Fig. -5-.

To prevent an easy withdrauuil of objects from the main pocket 2 through an entrance opening 3, I preferably equip the said pocket with resilient elements 11 disposed close to the said entrance opening 3 and normally forcibly closing the said opening.

Owing to the greater pressure required to expand the entrance opening 3 when equipped with such a guard formation, the wearer of the coat Wlll readily be aware of any attempt made to pick the said pocket through the entrance opening thereto, and in case the pickpocket should get his hand into the pocket, the guard formation would prevent him from readily removing articles from th pocket. 7

Where the pocket construction of my invention is to be used in connection with change pockets on mens trousers, the intermediary opening connecting the change pocket 12 with the trousers pocket 13 may 30 disposed along one edge of the change pocket, as shown in Fig. 6-. In this case, the said aperture is normally contracted by an elastic band 14 which draws the portion of the pocket surrounding the said opening into folds, and which is equipped with a tab 15 by means of which the said elastic band may be distended to expand the pocket into the position shown in dotted lines, thereby permitting the contents of this pocket to drop into the main trousers pocket 13, and to be removed therefrom through the usual entrance opening 16 of the said trousers pocket.

lit will be evident from the above description, that the pocket construction of my invention will readily permit the insertion of objects into the main pockets in accordance with the usual custom, but that they will make it difficult for any one to withdraw such objects through the entrance opening of the pocket, although permitting the user of the garment to easily remove the contents of the said pockets through the auxiliary pockets associated therewith.

While I have shown and described the pocket construction of my invention as ap-- plied to mens coats and trousers, I do not wish to be limited to these applications, nor to the particular details of the embodiments herein disclosed, it being evident that these might be modified in many ways without departing from the spirit of my invention.

1' claim as new and desire to cover by Letters Patent: I

1. In a garment, the combination with a pocket, of a second pocket-depending into the interior thereof, each of said pockets having a separate entrance opening, one thereof having an intermediary opening connecting the interiors of said pockets, and elastic means associated with said intermediary opening and normally closing the same, said elastic means so disposed as to be capable of manipulation by a hand inserted in the first-named pocket to open said intermediary opening.
