Y This invention relates to wrenches and has for one object the rprovision of a simple, strong and durable'wrench in which the jaws may be made to approach or recede from eachother by an oscillatory movement of the handle and in which lthe receding, movement of the jaws may-)bet arrested at any desiredpoint. 1; Y f
A further object of the invention is to provide a wrench in which the aws may be disposed in angular relation to the jaw support and locked in such angular relation.

The inner opposed faces of this sleeve or shank-engaging portion are flattened so as to engage the flattened sides 25 of the shank in order that while -the jaw may move longitudinally upon the shank it cannot rotate about the same. The inclined or beveled face 21 coacts with the Working face of the jaw so as toenable the jaw to readily engage a hexagonal nut in the same manner that the lug or projection 18 coacts with the working face of the jaw 13.
The jaw 22 is provided with a notch or recess- 26 which receives the eye or ring 11 extending from the` housing 8 so that the movement of the housing relative to the basefbar or jaw support will effect a corresponding movement of the jfaw 22 upon the shank or. stem 12 relative to thev jaw 13. T he jaw 22 is further provided With a' small recess or scat 27 adapted to receive the lug or projection 18 when the jaws are brought together' so that they may loemade to engage a very small nut or bolt head.
It will. be readily understood from the foregoing description, that when the handle 1 is oscillatcd upon its pivotal connection with the cheek-plates the gear A2 will tend to ride upon the rack teeth 7 and, consequentty, relative. movement of the handle and the baseball will be effected. The cheeloplates will, of course, follow thel movement of the handle and, consequently, the jaw 22 will bel causedto move toward or4 from the jaw 13, inasmuch as the guide or feyc* 11. extending ro'nr the housing 8 which forms an elongation oli the cheekplates fits 4within the notch in the jaw 22 and torces the said jiaw to follow the: movement of said housing and cheek-plates TheI bore of the guide or eye 11 is circular so that the stem or shank 12 may rotate easily therein under proper manipulation of the wrench. The extremity of the shank beyond the groove 28 is provided with radial slots or notches `31 which are adapted to be engaged by a latch 32 so as to lock the shank in any position in which it may be set. This latch 32 is pivoted Within the housing or standard 30 and is provided on its opposite sides with milled thumb-pieces or handle members 33 adapted to extend through and seat in notches 34 formed in the outer edges of the standard or housing 30, as clearly shown. A spring 35 is seated in the end of the base-bar or support and extends between the sides of the standard 30 to bear upon the end of the latch 32 so that the latch will be held normally toward the shank. As shown in Fig.v 5 the standard or hous- .ing 30 is constructed with an open-ended Islot 37 to receive the Working end of the latch 32 and prevent lateral movement thereof so that the latch will always be in proper position to engage one of the notches 31.v The standard is also provided With a circular opening 38 to receive the enrd of the shank 12 and further provided with an ari-- guiar opening or socket 39 to receive thev end of the base-har or' jaw supportv When the latch is in engagement with the stem or shank the finger-pieces 33 will lie flush within the notches or seats 34 so that they will present no projections or obstacles which might interfere with the successful operation of the tool. in my present tool will be fou-nd highly effi,- cient. Ordinarily, oscillation of the handle to effect such reverse movement of the nut would simply move the jaw 22 away from the jaw 13, but by providing the thumblatch 40 I am enabled to hold the jaw 22 at any point along the shank and the base-bar. It will be noticed that this thumb-latch 40 is provided with a shank piece or handle member 41 which lies adjacent one edge of the handle and from which extends spaced plates or jaws 42 which t over the handle and upon the opposite sides of the same. A pivot pin 43-is inserted through these aws 42 and the handle, and the aws are provided with gripping faces 44 adapted to engage the adjacent edges 45 of the cheek-plates so that the movement of the cheek-plates will be arrested. Small teeth, indicated at 46, may be provided upon these engaging faces 44 and the edges 45 of the cheek-plates, but these teeth are not absolutely necessary, although the provision of the same permits a more positive holding of the cheek-plates. The latch is normally held out of engagement with the cheek-plates by a spring 47 secured to the under side of the thumb-piece or handle member 41 and bearing upon the handle 1 of the tool.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have provided an ex ceedingly simple and eiiicient tool which may be readily manipulated in restricted places and without any discomfort to the operator.
In order that the range of usefulness of the tool may be given the greatest possible scope I provide a supplemental jaw 48 which may be fitted to one of the jaws 13 or 22 and thereby convert the tool into a pipe wrench. This supplemental jaw 48 is provided with a serrated working face 49, as clearly shown, and has spaced wings 50 adapted to fit against the opposite sides of the jaw 13 or the jaw 22 and be secured thereto by a pin inserted through openings provided for that purpose. The supplemental j aw is constructed with a notch 51 to permit it to fit close to the shank 12 and also is provided with a tooth or lug 52 on its rear side adapted to en age the recess 27 in the jaw 22 so as to be rmly seated against the jaw and held'f-against lateral movement Having thus describedl the invention what is claimed as new is -1. 2. A tool comprising a handle, a jaw support carried by the handle, the handle being arranged to oscillate in the longitudinal plane of the jaw support, jaws swiveled on said support, and means on the support for locking the jaws in a set position.
3. A tool comprising a handle, a jaw support, a housing inclosing the supportand the end of the handle, jaws swiveled upon the support, a connection between one of said jaws and the housing, and a latch mounted upon the handle and adapted to engage said housing.
4. The combination of a jaw support, jaws swiveled thereon, means for effecting relative movement of the jaws, and means carried by the jaw support and acting upon one end of the swiveled mounting of the jaws to hold the jaws in a set relation to the jaw support. j
5. The combination of a base-bar having a lug at one end, a standard at the opposite end of said bar, a wrench jaw having a stem swiveled in the said lug and in the said standard, a jaw slidably mounted on said stem, means for moving said slidable jaw to and from the first mentioned jaw, and a latch mounted in the said standard and engaging the end of the stem to lock the same in set relation to the basevbar.
6. The combination of a jaw-support, a housing secured to one end of said support, a wrench jaw having a stem swiveled at one end to the jaw-support and having its opposite end fitted in the said housing, a swiveled connection between said end and said housing, and a latch mounted in said housing and adapted to engage said end of the stem beyond said swiveled connection.
7. The combination of a jaw-support, a housing secured to one end of said support, a wrench-jaw having a stem swiveled at one end to the end of the jaw support and having its other end swiveled Within the said housing and provided with radial notches in its extremity, a latch pivoted within the housing and ada ted to engage said notches, and means for liolding said latch in said engagement.
8. The combination of a jaw support, a housing secured to one end of said support and provided with notches in its opposite vthereon without putting v' excessive strain .upon the-pin by which it isi-'heldin place.
