Be it known that I, JUDsoN L. 'lHoMsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Filters, of which the following is a specification.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a compact and novel form of filter adapted for attachment to a faucet, and one of the particularly novel features of the construction resides in means for connecting the filter with a faucet of that type which is not provided with exterior hose threads but with a smooth exterior.
A further object resides in an improved vfilter construction which is divided into cap and base portions so as to permit the base portion to be readily detached from the cap portion without detaching the latter from the faucet.
The invention further resides in means for supporting` filtering materials of different character for successive passage there-V through of the water.
Other features of novelty will be more fully described in connection with the `accompanying drawings and will be more particularly pointed out and ascertained in and by the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrative of one embodiment of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
As illustrated, 1 designates a hollow base portion adapted to contain a filtering medium such as charcoal 2 and provided with a restricted or tapering bottom 3 on which a foraminous filter support 4 may be disposed. The base 1 is provided with a discharge end 5 which projects downwardly some distance below the filter support 4.
rllhe filtering medium 2 is housed in the base portion 1 between its foraminous support 4 and a foraminous top 6, and the base 1 is spun or flanged outwardly, as indicated at 7, to support said foraminous cap 6.

from the flange 8, as will be clearly seen by reference to Fig. 2. 0n the inside of the free margin 9 l dispose fastening lugs 10, the purpose of which will presently be de scribed.
Mounted upon the foraminous top 6 is a layer of fibrous material which may be a sheet of cotton 11 which is preferably of a size to completely cover the foraminous top 6. In order to deflect the water so as to prevent it from passing whollv centrally through the filter, I provide a deflector 12 which is dished to present a convex surface to the entering water and deflect it outwardly and annularly toward openings 13 'of registry with the lugs 10, as indicated in Fig. 3, to lock the deflector plate in position. A handle or grip 16 is provided for this purpose.
The cap portion of the filter comprises a ring 17 which is provided with an outwardly projecting flange 18 and which is adapted to fit over the free margin 9. A nipple portion 19, of the cap part of the filter, has its free margin 2O spun or otherwise lapped over the flange 18 to connect the nipple portion 19 with the ring 17. The
nipple portion 19 extends upwardly to form a faucet nipple 21 which is shown to be externally and internally threaded, in the present construction. Soldered or otherwise secured to the nipple portion 19 is an annular flange member 22 which is provided with a flange 23 extending inwardly of the nipple 21 to support a tubular washer, hereinafter described, and which is provided with a flange 24 which supports a packing ring 25, of rubber or the like. The packing ring 25 is adapted for engagement with the free margin 9 of the base of the filter when the base and cap portions are secured in place as shown in Fig. 2 so as to provide a watertight fit therebetween.
I provide novel means for securing the base and cap portions of the filter in watertight connected relation, as shown in Fig. 2, and such means may be of the following construction: Nut rods 26 extend through the rim 8 and have their free ends 27 bent about the rim 8 so that the rods 26 will be pivotally connected with the rim 8 so as to be swung outwardly from the position shown in Fig. 1. The rim 20, of the cap portion, is notched, as at 28, so that the rods can be extended inwardly of the periphery of the rim 20 as shown in Fig. 1. Winged nuts 29 serve to tension the rod 26 and engage the rim 20 to tightly grip the free margin 9 of the base portion, against the packing 25. f
I have found in practice that the winged nuts 29 can be forced outwardly, off from engagement with the rim 20, without unturning the nuts 29 or loosening the same so that it will be seen that I have provided frictional means for locking the base cap portions` of the filter together.
Ihave shown, more particularly in Fig. 2, the manner in which the improved filter can be attached to a faucet having a smooth end. First, Vreferring to Fig. 2, 33 designates a tubular washer interposed in the nipple 2l and seated on the supporting flange 23. The
When the thimble 36 is turned downwardly of the nipple 21, the tubular washer 33 will be stressed lengthwise and compression will cause the washer 33 to buckle inwardly against the smooth surface of the faucet 30 in such a manner as not only to provide a water-tight fit but also to frictionally support the filter on the faucet.
I wish to lay special stress upon the fact that compressive stress is imposed upon the tubular washer 33, endwise thereof, or in other words, in the direction of its length, as I have found that I can obtain a more effective. buckling action than would be possible in a construction where the tubular washer were merely contracted about the faucet under stress imposed angular to the longitudinal axis of the washer 33. It is believed that the advantages and utilities of my invention will be fully understood from the foregoing description, and while I have herein shown and described one specific form of my invention, I do not wish to be limited thereto except for such .limitations as the claims may import.
I claim 1. In a faucet filter, a hollow body opening to flow from a faucet and provided with an internal shoulder, a foraminous top mounted on said shoulder, a. fibrous filter sheet laid over said foraminous top, a centrally i1nper forate deflector arched toward the inflowing water and provided with marginally disposed water passage openings, and means carried by said body to be engaged with said deflector to secure the same in an operative position and in bearing engagement over the fibrous sheet to hold this sheet against floating as the water is introduced through the marginally disposed passages of the defiector.
2. In a faucet filter, a hollow body opening to flow from a faucet and provided with a shoulder, a foraminous top mounted on said shoulder, a fibrous sheet disposed on said foraminous top, a centrally imperforate defieetor disposed on said fibrous sheet and arched toward inflowing water to provide a central space between said deflector and said fibrous sheet, marginal portions of said defiector being perforate for passage of water therethrough and provided with notches, and lugs on said body for engagement with [ni-notched portions of said deflector to hold the same in position.
3. In a faucet filter, a hollow body opening to flow from a faucet, a foraminous sheet mounted in the upper portion of said hollow body, a fibrous filter sheet laid over said foraminous sheet, a centrally imperforate deflector arched upwardly and provided with a plurality of water passages formed through the marginal edge thereof to permit water to flow to the fibrous sheet and through the arching of said defiector to cause an even distribution of the water entirely over said fibrous filter sheet, means to mount the filter upon a faucet in a relation that the infiowing water is received in its entire volume upon the imperforate portions of the deflector, and means to mount the defiector against displacement and to hold the same in a relation to clamp the fibrous filter sheet against the foraminous sheet and to prevent floating of said fibrous sheet as water is introduced through the marginally disposed passages.
4. In a faucet filter, a hollow body opening to flo-w from a faucet, a foraminous sheet mounted in the upper portion of said hollow body, a fibrous filter sheet disposed on said foraminous sheet, a centrally imperforate deflector arched toward the inflowing water to receive the entire volume upon the imperforate portions and having marginally disposed notches, a plurality of water passages formed through the marginal edges of said arched deflector to permit the flow of water to the fibrous filter sheet, and through the arching of said delector to cause an even distribution of water entirely over said filter sheet, and pins carried internally by said hollow body to permit the deleotor to be tted down the rest of its edges against the brous filter sheet as the pins are passed through the notches of said delector and said parts so arranged that as the deeotor is given turning movement to bring the solid edge portions thereof under the pins, the defiector will be clamped against the fibrous ilter sheet to hold the same against oating as the water is introduced through the water passages.
