Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed April 18, 1914. Serial No. 832,838.

This invention relates to moisteners,-and

has for its object to provide a device of this character of simple and light construction primarily adapted for desk use and for carrying in the pocket of a garment.

Another object of the invention is the V provision of means for positively closing the mouth of the liquid container for preventing the liquid contents from leaking into the pocket of a' carrier or upon any-other object on which the moistener is placed.

Figure 1 represents a top plan view of a moistener constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 represents a side elevation thereof, Fig. 3 represents a front elevation of the moistener, and, Fig. 4 represents a central sectional view through a slightly modified form of the moistener inclosed by an ornamental housingor casing.

Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10, indicates the body of a suitable liquid container which is preferably formed of a flexible or semi-flexible material such as rubber or celluloid, and which may be formed in any shape desired, being here shown as having substantially circular end walls 11 and a substantially annular side wall 10. The thickness of the material oomposing the container is preferably increased at the end walls 11 for reinforcing and strengthening the parts thereof. A neck 12 is formed on the body of the container and is composed of the same flexible material as the latter. The neck 12 is formed with an elongated opening 13 communicating with the interior ofthe body and in which a suitable llquid absorbent 14 is removably dis+ posed.

A presser bar 15 is disposed on each side of the neck 12, and these presser bars'are pressed inwardly toward the I neck 12 by suitable springs 16 secured on'the opposite sides of-the neck by pins 19 and having the opposite ends looped around pins formed on the ends of the bars 15. The tension of the springs 16 is suflicient to contract the neck 12 and retain the inner surfaces of the walls thereof in contact and thus prevent the escured centrally on eachof the presser bars 15 and isformedto snugly fit against the walls of the container 1 In use, the moistener may be conveniently and safely carried about inthe pocket, or any .othersuitable receptacle, and when it desired to-use the moistener to apply a postage stamp or seal an envelop the free ends of the handle 18 are pressed inwardly bythe'fingers of one hand thus depressing the opposite side portion of the annular thin Patented July 11, 1916.

When the handles 18 are released the tension of the springs 16 again draw the presser bars 15 together, clamping'the neck 12 of the container and positivelyv preventing further leakage of the liquid contents.

Referring to Fig. 4:, wherein is shown a slightly modified form of the invention, the numeral 21 indicates a casing or housin for the moistener which is particularly adaptable for desk use. The casing 21 may be formed to represent any desired object or person so as to present a neat and attractive appearance and is formed in thetop with an opening 23 through which the'finger of the operator is adapted to be extended to depress the upstanding arm 24 and handle 23 which latter is disposed against theflexiblewall ofthe liquid container 25 having a neck 26 also formed of flexible material. A suitable stand 27 is secured to the bottom 22 of thecasing 21 for supporting the con i tainer.,: The stand 27 is formed with an tainer in operative position within said conoutwardly directed arm 28 carrying a cross bar 29 engaging and supporting the neck 26 of the container. The handle 23 is provided with a presser bar 30 engaging against the top of the neck 26 and normally retaining the latter closed by the tension of spring. 31 connecting the outer extremities of the presser bar 30 with the stationary bar 29. An opening is formed through the vertical wall of the casing 21 and the end of the neck 26 extended therethrough, and a suitable section of liquid absorbent 32 is disposed within the extreme outer end of said neck.

In use, when it is desired to moisten an object with the absorbent strip 32, the member 24: is depressed together with the adjacent portion of the body of the container 25. Simultaneously, the presser bar is raised from contact with the neck 26 and the compressed liquid within the container 25 permitted to flow through the neck 26 and onto the absorbent strip 32.

What I claim is 1. A moistener comprising a flexible body, a flexible neck extending the width of said Y body, means to normally hold said. neck closed, and means to eject the contents of said body and to open said neck.

2. A moistener comprising a flexible body,

' a flexible neck extending the width of said body, bars extending transversely across said neck, spring means connecting said bars and normally tending to draw the bars together to close the neck, and means to eject the contents of said body and to open said neck.

3. A moistener comprising a flexible body, a flexible neck extending the width of said body, a bar disposed on eachrside of and extending transversely across spring means connecting said bars normally tending to draw the bars together to close said neck, an arcuate handle secured to the central portion of each of said bars and embracing said flexible body whereby when said handles are compressed the contents of said body will be ejected and the neck opened.

l. A moistener comprising a body formed of flexible material, a flexible neck for said body, a liquid absorbent in the outer end of said neck, means for normally closing said flexible neck, apair of oppositely disposed handles connected to said closing means, a support for the body connected to the lowermost of said handles, an upright plunger secured at the top of said body to the other of said handles and in directalinement with said support whereby said handles are compressed and the closing means released and the contents forced from said body when said plunger is pressed downward.
