ISAAC LEWIS RI-IIEU'I'AN, 0F RICHMOND, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR TO UNION ENVELOPE COMPANY, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA, A CORPORATION OF VIRGINIA.
ENVELOP.
Application filed March 18, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Isaac L. RHEUTAN, citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county 'of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention consists in the novel features hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which I have shown a number of forms of the in vention, selected by me for the purpose of illustration, and said invention is fully disclosed in the following description and claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan view of my preferred form of envelop blank which is adapted to be folded and pasted to form a 7 four pocket envelop. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the side flaps folded upon the body portion. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the back of the completed envelop. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a modified form of blank, which is also adapted to be assembled to form a four pocket envelop. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the blank shown in Fig. 4., but showing the partition flap folded upon the body of the envelop. Fig. 6 is a view of the back of the completed envelop, as made from the blank shown in Figs. L and 5. Fig. 7 is a plan view of another modified form of blank, which is similar to that shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 8, except that the central line of adhesive is omitted in order to form an envelop having one large and two small pockets. Fig. 8 is a View similar 'to Fig. 7 showing the side flaps folded upon the body of the envelop. Fig. 9 is a similar view showing the back flap folded upon the side flaps. Fig. 10 is a plan view of a further modified form of blank for a three pocket envelop. Fig. 11 is asimilar view showing theside flaps of the blank shown in Fig. 10 folded upon the body portion of the envelop and connected together at their meeting edges.
The object of my invention is to provide an envelop, which is particularly well adapted for use in church collection systems, in which said envelops are primarily intended Specification of LettersPatent. i

for the reception of contributions of money, etc., to be applied to specific purposes.
A further object of my invention is to provide an envelop of this character, having a greater number of pockets than those envelops used heretofore, whereby a greater number of causes may be subscribed to, and a single envelop used.
In the embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, l designates the body of my preferred envelop, which is oblong in shape and is provided on its lateral edges 1th side flaps 2 adapted to be folded over on the main body and which are of such length that when folded a space is left between their free ends. A back flap 3 is provided on the lower edge of said body 1 and a sealing flap 4 is provided upon the upper edge of said body. These flaps are folded along the lines 5, 6 and 7 respectively, to form the complete envelop.
The back flap corresponds approximately in form and dimensions to the body portion 1 to provide a large unbroken surface upon the rear of the envelop for the purpose of printing informative data, as to the use of the different pockets of the complete envelop. An adhesive 8 is applied upon the body portion 1 and upon the back flap 3 intermediate their lateral edges, for a purpose hereinafter described and a score line or weakened portion 9is provided across the face of the envelop intermediate its ends for the purpose of permitting the separation of the completed envelop into separate sealed envelops, each having two pockets.
The side flaps 2 are each preferably provided along their outer edge with a line of adhesive 10 and in making up or folding the envelop these flaps 2 are first folded along the lines 5, over upon the body portion, where said adhesives 8 and 10 unite the outer edges of the sidefiaps to the center of thebody 1. The back flap 3, which is also provided on its lateral edges with an adhesive 11, is then folded along the line 6 over upon the side flaps and is joined to said side flaps and to the central portion of the body by the adhesives 8 and 11. It will, therefore, be manifest that two pockets will be provided between the side flaps 2 and the body 1 of the envelop and two pockets will also be formed between the back flap 3 and the side fiaps.
Cut away portions 12 are also provided In Figs. 4, and c I have illustrated a slight modification of my invention, in which.
1 is the body of the envelop, 2 the side flap, 3 the partition flap and 4: the sealing flap.
In this instance, however, the partition flap is first folded upon the body and con- I nected tothe same by the adhesives 5 and 6* to provide a plurality of pockets between the partition flap 3 and the body 1 The side flap 2 are then folded upon the partition 3*- and connected to the same by the, adhesive 7, which is provided upon the lateral edges of said side flaps, and the adhesive 8 which is provided upon the lower edges of said side flaps, thereby forming a pocket between each of the side flaps 2 and the partition 3.
Thetwo envelops described above are four pocket envelops and I shall now describe my improved three pocket envelop, which is quite similar thereto.
In the embodiment of my invention illustrated in Figs 7, 8 and 9, the blank is exactly the same as that illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3, with the exception that the central adhesive 8 and score line 9 are omitted. The blankis also folded exactly as in the envelop shown in said Figs. 1 to 3 and by omitting the adhesive from the center of the envelop and securing the back flap 3 atits lateral edges only to the side flaps 2, a large pocket is provided between the side flaps 2 and the, back flap 3 and two smallenpoekets are provided betweenthe side flaps and the body 1 of the envelop.
In the last modification illustrated in Flgs. l0 and 11, the blank is precisely the same as that shown in Figs. 1 to 3, with the exception that the score line 9 and the adhesive 8 is omitted from the body 1 of the envelop and the side flaps are lengthened and the adhesive 10 omitted from one of them. In making up this form I first fold the side flaps over upon the body portion 1 and connect their meeting ends by the adhesive 10, after which the back flap is folded and gummed in a manner similar to the envelop shown in .with near the center of the same,
- Figs. 1 to 3 and described heretofore. With two smaller pockets will be provided between the side flaps and the back flap 3..
From the foregoing, it will be obvious that I have devised a novel envelop, in which provision is made for the separate reception of a number of contributions to be applied to different purposes.
It is also obvious that other variations may be made in the details of the construction without departing from the spirit of my invention and I, therefore, do not limit myself to the exact details herein shown and described.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An envelop comprising a body portion, provided with side flaps, a back and a sealing flap, said flaps being so gummedthat a partition will be provided between the front and rear of the envelop, said partition being connected intermediate its ends to a portion of the. envelop, whereby a plurality of pockets will be provided both longitudinally of the envelop and transversely thereof, having the same sealing flap for all.
2. An envelop comprising a body portion provided with side flaps, a back and a sealing flap, the side flaps being folded inwardly upon the body and being connected theresaid back flap being superposed upon the side flaps and being connected to the same at their outer edges.
3. An envelop comprising a body portion provided with side flaps, a back and a sealing flap, the side flaps being provided on folded and their outer edges with an adhesive and being folded inwardly upon the body and being connected to the center of the same by said adhesive, said back flap being provided on its lateral edges and intermediate its-ends with an adhesive and being folded upwardly upon the side flaps and connected to the same by the adhesive on said back flap.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
ISAAC LEWIS RHEUTAN.
