UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PAUL I-I. WAGGENER, OF COLUMBIA, KENTUCKY.
ENVELOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 26, 1916.
Application filed December 26, 1914. Serial No. 879,129.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PAUL H. WAGGENER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbia, in the county of Adair and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Envelop, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in envelops, one object of the invention, being the provision of a novel construction of return envelop, in which the same may be maintained folded when sent outward and be readily released to be folded and maintained in such folded condition when returned, there being novel means provi led for forming a temporary connection upon the forwarding of the envelop which permits the same to be readily disengaged or severed to permit the opening and proper folding and sealing of the return envelop.
A further object of the present invention, is the provision of an envelop of this character, which is readily folded in either position and which contains proper writing surfaces for reports and bills, or order blanks, thus producing a thoroughly efiicient and practical envelop of this character.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of one of the envelops in fiat or blank form. Fig. 2 is a similar view of another form. Fig. 3 is a similar view of another variation.
Each of the envelops is formed of a blank, and embodies a body or central portion 1 having a final sealing flap 2 projecting therefrom and provided with mucilage or ad hesive. The body portion of the envelop illustrated in Fig. 1 has a temporary sealing flap 3 opposite the flap 2, and of tapered form, the flap 3 being provided with a detachable or severable adhesive tab 4 at its free end. The body portion 1 is provided with a pair of opposite side flaps 5, one of which is provided at its free end with adhesive tabs 9'. The flaps 5 are adapted to overlap.
In use, the letter, statement, printed matter, or the like, can be provided upon the inner surfaces of the body portion and flaps, and also upon the outer surface of the body portion if desired. When the envelop is mailed the first time, the fiap 2 is first folded upon the body portion 1, and the two side flaps 5 are then folded upon the flap 2, and finally, the flap 3" is folded upon the flaps 5, the tab 1 being moistened so as to adhere to the basal portion of the flap 2. The flaps 5 will overlap one another and can be pasted together, or left free, in order that they can be pasted together when the envelop is returned. The first address is written upon the flap 3 which is outermost, and when the envelop is received, it is opened by severing the tab 4c from the flap 3. Then, when the envelop 1s returned, the flap 3 is folded upon the body portion, and the flaps 5 are then folded upon the flap 3 and can be pasted together, and the fiap 2 is finally folder over the flaps 5 and pasted to the flaps 3 and 5. The tab a can be made detachable by a score line between the flap 3 and tab 43. The use of the flaps 5 which can be pasted together, enables the envelop to be mailed first class, or second class when the flaps 5 are not attached, and which enables them to be pulled out for purpose of iuspection.
In the form illustrated in Fig. 2, the temporary sealing flap 30 is of about the same shape as the final sealing flap 2, and the adhesive tab 40 of the flap 30 is shorter than said flap. The side flaps 5 are tapered, and one of them has the adhesive tab 12 at its free end to be pasted to the other side flap.
In the variation illustrated in Fig. 3, the adhesive tab 49 is co-eXte-nsive in length with the flap 3 and the side flaps 5 are of different form than those" shown in Fig. 2, or practically the same as those shown in Fig. 1, with the exception that one of the flaps 5 has a single elongated adhesive tab13 at its free end instead of two tabs 9 as seen in Fig. 1.
What is claimed is:
An envelop embodying a central portion having a final sealing flap projecting therefrom and provided with adhesive, an opposite temporary sealing flap provided With a as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signadetacha ble adhesive tab 2%; its free 2nd, am; ture in the presence of two Witnesses. a air of o oosite side aps, the ree en I of hne side l i ap being provided With adhe- WAGGENER' 5 sive and being arranged to overlap and be VVitnesses:
