Description

A. H. SYMONS.
CLAMP FOR CONCRETE FORMS.
APPLICATION FILED APR- 13. I912.
Patented Nov. 16, 1915.
O /0 O O fiooooocpooo OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOQ designates ARTHUR H.
COMPANY, OF
SYMONS, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR TO SYMONS CLAMP KANSAS CITY, KANSAS,
A CORPORATION OF MISSOURI.
CLAMP FOR CONCRETE-FORMS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 16, 1915.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, ARTHUR H. SYMoNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps for Concrete-Forms; and I do declare the fol lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention .relates to an improved clamp for concrete forms and more particularly to forms for the construction of columns, or the like; the prime object of the invention being to provide means for holding the form boards in close relation while material is being poured thereinto and while such material is becoming hardened or set.
With my improved devicathe material of which a form is made may be used a great number of times, thereby effecting a great saving of material and labor. as the form is not destroyed when removed, and may be easily and quickly and removed therefrom without damage to the material contained therein.
The improved details of structure of my improvement are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure I is a perspective view of a column form, showing the application of one of my improved clamps thereto. Fig. II is a detail view of one of the clamp units with one of the corner brackets thereon. Fig. III is a detail perspective of the corner bracket. which forms a part of my improved clamp. Fig. IV is a side elevation of a corner bracket, with a clamp a'rm positioned therein. and showing the upper open aperture. Fig. V is an end view of same showing the stop member on the clamp arm. Fig. VI is a rear view of the corner bracket.
Referring more in detail to the parts: 1 a column form comprising boards set on end with their edges in contact, the shape of the column being immaterial. as the clamp may be adapted for use with forms of any cross section.
2 designates the clamp units, each of which comprise a pair of arms 3-3, formed the metal arms 3, which assembled on the forms' of strap metal and pivotally connected at one end by a pin 4, the free ends of each arm being provided with a plurality of apertures 5. and one of the pair with a stop lug 6.
7 designates corner brackets which are adapted for application to the ends of crossed arms 3-3' of the clamp members, each of the brackets being preferably triangular and having flat sides 8-8 meeting at a right angle and provided with slots 9-9, the slots in the opposite members being arranged in parallel planes and spaced according to the width of the metal arms 3. The corner brackets are slidably mounted on project through the closed slots;9, the travel being limited by the stop member 6 on the free ends of the arm members 3. The arm members 3' are adapted for insertion into the brackets through the open slots 7 so that when the arm members 3 and 3' are positioned, they overlie and project from the brackets without jamming. Each corner bracket has apertures 10 adapted for registration with the apertures 5 of the arms 3-3, when the parts are assembled, and for receiving pins 11, having heads 12, whereby the brackets are locked on the arms. and the arms locked together to hold the clamp to the form.
13 designates a tightening lever, which is preferably formed from a piece of strap metal. having a handle 14 and a cam head 15, provided with pins 16, which project therefrom and are adapted to take into the apertures 55, in the arms 3 or 3.
In using my improved clamp, boards are assembled and a pair of clamps applied to opposite corners thereof, so that their free ends overlie. As recited, the brackets are permanently mounted on the arm members 3, so that in order to assemble the free end of the arm 3' within the bracket, the bracket is moved backwardly on its mounting arm and over the arm 3, the slot 9 being offset from the slot 9' sufliciently to admit the arm 3. The lever-13 is then applied by inserting one of the pins 15 into an arm aperture 5 adjacent the bracket so that I manipulation of the lever .will force the cam head It against the bracket edge and move the bracket against the form to draw the arms 3 and 3' outwardly and tighten the clamps. The pins 11 are then inserted in the bracket apertures 10 and arm apertures 5 when the same are in registration, to hold the form the clamp against movement. When the clamp arms are drawn tightly against the form, the pins may be placed in arm apertures outside of the brackets and driven down to'close the arms. It is also readily apparent that a'number of clamps may be applied to a form and that while applying or removing the clamp material in the form will not be injured or destroyed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
A form clamp comprising bars having ends adapted to cross one another at a corner of the clamp, and provided with a series of holes in said ends, a block having a recess in its inner longitudinal edge extending from end to end of said block and transversely thereof to a point near its outer'longitudinal edge, said recess being of sufficient depth to receive the crossed ends of said bars resting one upon another, the outer edge of said block having a longitudinal slot between its ends communicating with said recess, the bottom of said slot being on a level substantially with the bottom of said recess and forming therewitha broad bearing surface for the lower bar end which extends through said slot, said upper bar end fitting edgewise within said recess and lengthwise of said block, and seated upon the lower bar end and against the inner wall of the recess in said block, and Wedges fitting within the holes in said bars and contacting with the said block.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR H. SYMONS.
