E. KERR.
ATTAGHING UMBRELLA OR CANE HANDLES.

, UNITED STATES EDWARD KERR, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
ATTACHING UMBRELLA. OR CANE HANDLES.
Application filed September Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 5, 1912.
6, 1911. Serial No. 647,995.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD KERR, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, a citizen of the United States, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Attaching Umbrella or Cane Handles, of which improvements the following is a specification.
The invention described herein relates to certain improvements in means for attaching handles to umbrella rods, cane sticks, etc., and has for its object a construction whereby the handle may be so secured to the rod, etc., as not only to prevent accidental detachment but also independent rotation of one part in the other.
The invent-ion is hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Inthe accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification Figure 1 is a side elevation of the handle and umbrella rod embodying my improvement; Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional elevations at right angles to each other of the joint between the handle and rod; Fig. 4. is a sectional view on a plane indicated by the line IV-IV Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is an end View of the handle; Figs. 6, 7 and 8 are detail views of portions of the attaching means.
In the practice of my invention the umbrella rod or cane stick is provided with one or more shoulders 2, which in the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 6 are located adjacent to the end of the portion of the rod or stick designed to be inserted in the handle. An axial opening 3 is formed in the handle for the reception of the rod or stick the wall of the opening being grooved at one or more points for the passage of the shoulder or shoulders 2 when the handle is slipped onto the rod. At their lower ends the groove or grooves t are provided with lateral extensions 5 into which the shoulder or shoulders are shifted by the relative rotation of the handle or rod, hereby locking the handle and rod together as against independent longitudinal movement.
In order to prevent a relative rotation of the rod or handle whereby the shoulder and groove may be brought into alinement a suitable lock is provided. In the construction shown this lock consists of a key or keys 6 adapted to be inserted into the groove or grooves 4 and extend into the path of any angular movement of the shoulders, thereby locking the handle and rod as against relative rotation. \Vhile these keys may be secured in position by any suitable means it is preferred to employ an internally threaded nut 7 adapted to screw onto the handle and provided with an inwardly projecting flange 8, which when the nut is screwed onto the handle will bear in the outer ends of the keys holding the same in operative position.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to detachably connect handles to umbrella rods, etc., but heretofore such detachable connections have involved the employment of a tubular member secured by cement in the bandle proper. It is characteristic of my improvement that the employment of cement, etc., is avoided as parts of the connecting means are formed integral with the handle proper.
I claim herein as my invention:
1. The combination of a handle provided with an axial opening, and having a shoulder integral with the wall of said opening, a rod adapted to be inserted in said opening, means carried by the rod for engagement with an integral portion of the handle within the opening by a rotary movement of one part relative to the other, and a key extending in between the rod and the wall of the opening and engaging both parts to lock them as against independent rotation.
2. The combination of a rod provided with a shoulder, a handle having an axial opening for the reception of the shouldered portion of the rod and provided with means for engaging said shoulder by a rotation of the handle on the rod, and a key extending into the opening in the handle and engaging the handle and the shoulder on the rod and thereby locking the rod and handle as against independent rotation.
3. The combination of a handle having an axial opening provided with a groove having a portion parallel with and a portion at an angle to the axis of the handle, a rod provided with a shoulder adapted when the rod is inserted in the handle to pass along one portion of said groove and to be shifted by the rotation of the handle into the other In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set portion of the groove, a key fitting in the my hand. first portion of said groove and extending across the other portion to prevent the inde- EDWARD KERR pendent rotation of the handle or rod, and Witnesses:
a nut screwing onto the handle and locking ALICE A. TRILL,
the key in position. THOMAS J OYCE.
