Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec. 5, 1911. Application filed larch 6, 1911. Serial No. 612,578. 1
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, J ONATHAN G. SHUT- TLEWORTH and CHARLES L. SHUTTLEWORTH,
citizens of the United States, residin at Fairmont, in the county of Marion and tate of West Vir inia, have invented a new and of the combined folding foldable chair comprise useful Combined Chair and Swing; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the inven tion, such as will enable others skilled in'the art to which it appertains to makeand use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful combined folding chair and swing attachment.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a chair for babies or young children, capable of being attached to the back of a chair, as shown in the drawings, thus providing a high-chair, and which may be folded into a small compass, so .that the same may,
be stored away, or readily packed in a trunk or dress suit-case.
A further object of the invention is to provide a foldable portable chair, which may be attached to the ropes of a swing.
In the drawing, however, there is only distical fields this form may require slight alterations, to which the applicants are entitled, provided the alteratlons are comprehended by the appended claim.
The invention comprises further features and parts hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
Referring to-the drawings Figure 1, is a view in perspective showing the foldable chair as applied to the back of a dining chair. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective showing the foldable chair folded. 'Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation, of the chair, as utilized as a swing. Fig. 4 is a, view in front elevation showing the sides folded 1n dotted lines.
Referrin to the drawings 1 designates a dining chalr, to the back '2 of which the foldable chair 3 is applied. This foldable chair comprises the approximately arranged vertical frame 4, which is rectangular in contour.- Pivoted in the lower portion of the frame 4 to the sides thereof, by =means of ms or bolts 5 are the strips or bars 6. ecured to the bars or strips 6'is'the seat 7 of the foldable chair. The sides 8 of the the upper and lower chair and swing,-
pairs or strips 9 and 10, and the vertical bars as at 12 to the seat 7, so that the sides may be folded upon the seat 7 asshown in dotted lines in Fig. 4 and full lines in Fig. 2.
The table 13 of the foldable chair rests upon the sides 8, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and is provided on its lower face with part1al rotatable members (which are angular in form) 14. These members 14 are adapted to .be swung under and in engagement with the strips or bars 9, so as to hold the table in position. -These members 14 and the table 13 also constitute means for holding the sides of the chair in vertical positions as shown in Flg. 1. At the top portions of the sides of The lower strips or bars 10 are hinged.
the frame 4 eyes 15 are provided, between which and the. eyes 16 of the strips or bars 6 chains 17 are connected. These chains also pass through eyes 18 of the table 13, thus providing means for holding the table anchored to the other structure of the chair, especially when the chair is folded. The
members 14 are of spring material and are adapted to frictionally engage the strips or bars 9, and by this arrangement the table 13 may be adjusted outwardly upon the sides of the chair, thus arranging the chains 17 in the position shown .in full lines in Fig. 3, which will hold the seat 7 in a slight inclined position as shown in full lines in Fig. 3. The upper portions of the sides of the frame 4 are provided with hooks 19, which are adjustablewith relation to the frame 4. By arranging the books '19 adjustable, the chair is rendered applicable to dining chairs having backs of different heights. The hooks 19 are held in adjusted positions by the members 20. The hooks not only act as means for suspending the foldable chair upon backs of dining chairs, but also constitute suitable means, to which-cables. 22 of a swing may be connected, as shown in Fig. 3.
From the "foregoing it is apparent that a novel form' of portable folding chair has" been devised, and one which has been found to be practicable, simple and eflicient in con .struction and cheap to manufacture.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is A portable folding chair comprising a rectangular frame, aseat pivoted in the lower portion thereof, sides having a plurality of notches and-hinged to the seat and capable of foldingtoward one another upon the seat,
the chains for arranging the seats at an angle, the partial rotatable spring members and the notches constituting means for hold- 15 ing the table so adjusted.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
