UNITED STATES ATENT FFICE.
JOHN SAVELAND, OF LAKE, WISCONSIN. A
COMBINED SETTEE AND BED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 636,854, dated November 14, 1899. Application filed september 27, 1899. Serial No. 731,821. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN SAVELAND, of the town of Lake, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Set:
tee and Bed, of which the following, is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in a combination settee and bed that is especially adapted for use on steamboats and in hotels, where at times an extra number of seats are desirable during the day and an extra supply of beds are needed at night, the settee and bed embodying my invention being so constructed as to be adapted to serve asasettee 01' seats, and when two of these settees are connected together they form a bed adapted for reclining thereon at night.
The invention consists of the devices and their combinations as herein described and claimed or the equivalents thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of two settees connected together so as to form a bed. Fig. 2 is a view of the under side of the combined settees or bed shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view of one of the settees adapted to be combined with another settee to form a bed. Fig. 4 is a detail, partly in section, of the device for locking the two settees to each other. Fig. 5 is a detail, partly in section, of the means by which the frame of the back of the settee is secured to the body or seat of the settee.
In the drawings, 10 is the frame of a settee, which is preferably in square or substantially square form and is provided with legs 11, adapted to support the settee at proper distance from the floor. The top of the frame 10 is upholstered or otherwise provided with a suitable yielding cushion 12, covering substantially the entire upper surface of the frame.
The settee is provided with a back across it in one direction, at about the middleline thereof, which back consists of the upwardlyextending arms 1313, one at each side, and a connecting top rail, which is upholstered, as shown at 14, forming on the settee a medial back partitioning the settee into seats extending in opposite directions from the back. The arms 13 of the back, at their lower ends, are hinged to the frame of the settee conveniently by means of standards 15 15, secured to the frame of the settee and'projecting upwardly therefrom, and the back is held in upright position releasably on the standards 15, preferably by means of spring-latches 16 16, fastened to the arms 13 13 and adapted to take into notches therefor in the upper edges of the standards 15. By this construction the back maybe released from its upright position and tilted over, as shown in Fig. 1, the arms 13 being of such length that when they are turned down the top of the back 14 rests on and across one margin of the cushion 12, being thus adapted to serve as a pillow or bolster for the bed. Each settee is also advisably provided with a drawer 17, supported in the frame 10 and adapted to hold bedclothing.
These settees are provided with coupling devices whereby two of the settees can be connected together in the positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and these coupling devices preferably consist of a swinging latch 18 and a complementary catch 19, advisably secured to the underside of the frames of the settees adjacent to their ed ges, parallel with the back,
,the latch of each set of coupling devices being pivoted on one settee and the catch being fixed on the other settee. A spring 20 is advis'ably provided, adapted to bear against a flat face on the latch 18 when the latch is locked to the catch 19 and hold the latch in position against accidental release thereof from the catch, the latch being also provided with an opposite flat face, whereby the spring is also adapted to hold the latch in its retrieved or turned-back position against swinging and rattling when not in engagement with its catch 19.
The back 14 on the settee that in the com bined bed is at the foot of the bed is so distant from the back 14 at the head of the bed as not to be objectionable.
It must not be understood that devices embodying my invention are only adapted for use on steamboats or in hotels, for the'device may be appropriately and satisfactorily employed in private residences or in any other place where a combined settee and bed is desirable.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is- 1. A settee comprising a body-frame provided with legs, a cushion on the frame, and a back located medially oi": the settee and hinged thereto and upholstered so as to be adapted when in upright position to serve as a back to two oppositely-facing seats and when swung down to serve as a pillow or bolster.
2. In a settee the combination with a substantially flat-topped seat, of an upholstered back transversely of the settee medially thereof the supporting-arms of the back being hinged to the settee, and means for locking the back releasably in upright position dividing the settee into two oppositely-disposed seats, the back being adapted to be turned down forming a bolster along one margin of the settee.
3. In a settee, the combination with a substantially flat-topped seat, of an upholstered back transversely of the settee medially thereof, the supporting -arms of the back being hinged to the settee, means for locking the back releasably in upright position dividing the settee into two oppositely-disposed seats, the back being adapted to be turned down forming a bolster along one margin of the settee, and means on the settee adapted to secure the settee detachably at an edge parallel with the back or bolster to a complementary settee forming a bed.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN SAVELAND.
