NUT-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 9, 1911.11.
Application filed April 3, 1912. Serial No. 688,202.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I,`WILL1A1vrR. Gines, a citizen of the United States, residing `at East Liverpool, in the county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements inNut-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in nut locks; and the objects of my improvement are, first, to provide a device of this nature which is positive in action; second, to aiford facilities for obtainingthe proper adjustment of nuts upon bolts; and third, to provide one which is constructed of but a few parts thereby reducing the cost of a device of this nature to a minimum.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention relates to such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several parts as will be hereinafter fully` described and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention employed in connection with an ordinary rail joint. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line 2-2, Fig.; 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of my invention showing a portion thereof broken away. Fig. 4 is a perspective viewof an element used. Fig. 5, is a detail perspective View of one of the plates used in this invention.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate the preferred form of my invention, the rails land 2,:the fish plates 3, bolts Il, and hexagonal shaped nuts 5 constitute a rail joint of the ordinary type. My invention as embodied herein is shown in connection with this articular form of rail joint, however, I desire it to be understood that it can be advantageouslyemployed in connection with devices similar or analogous to this and that by so employing my invention as disclosed herein, the saine will not be deviated from in the least.
A substantially elongated plate iforms a body portion of my invention, which plate has alternately formed therein hexagonal shaped openings 7 and longitudinally extending slots 8. Auxiliary plates 9 are used, which plates have portions thereof bent upwardly as shown at 10 to form tongues for reception in said slots and which have formed near the center thereof openings 11 for reception of said bolts. The tongues aro provided with apertures l2 for the reception of the cotter pins 13 as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. The auxiliary plates are positioned upon one or more of the bolts as shown and are held in place by the nuts 5. The other plate is positioned over the nuts, they being received in the hexagonal opening so that the tongues project through the slots and it is readily obvious that when the cotter pins are secured in place, the removal of the plate is prevented. Each of the nuts being positioned in the hexagonal opening obviates all danger of their working loose upon the bolts.
From` the foregoing descrlptlon it is thought that the advantages and novel feai tures of my invention will be readily appreciated.
I desire it to be understood that I may make slight changes in the construction of the device embodied in this application without departing from the spirit of the invention in the least provided such changes fall within the scope of the sub-joined claim.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A nut lock'of the class described including an elongated plate having a bolt receiving opening formed therein, tongues formed on the opposite ends of said plate and, bent upwardly at right angles to the body portion thereof, said tongues being struck from a point adjacent two of the diagonally opposed corners, a platel having alternately placed slots and openings formed therein, and bolts having nuts screwed thereupon to be locked by the coaction of said plates for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM R. GIBBS.
