RAIL-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented ma e, 1915.
Application filed. September 26, 1914. Serial No. 863,667.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PRESTON A. MoMIL- LAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eau Gallie, in the county of Brevard and State of Florida, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rail-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a rail fastener, and has for its primary object to provide a fastener of this character wherein a track rail can be quickly and easily fastened or secured to a tie or detached therefrom, yet the rail is so mounted to permit expansion or contraction thereof, the fasteners being of novel form to avoid the working loose thereof during constant use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a fastener of this character wherein the lateral spreading of the rails is obviated.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a fastener of this character which is simple in construction, reliable and eflicient in use, andinexpensive in manufacture.
WVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawingz-Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan View of a railway tie and rail showing the fastener constructed in accordance with the invention securing the rail to the tie. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4+4 of Fig. 1.
Similar reference characters indicate c0rresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates a portion of a railway tie, preferably made from concrete and formed near each end with a transverse channel forming a seat B for the rail C, which is of the ordinary well-known construction, and is fas tened to the tie in a manner hereinafter fully described.
The fastener for the rail C comprises a pair of clamping plates 5 which are arranged on opposite sides of the rail C and are engaged in counter seats 6 formed in the upper face of the tie A, the plates being disposed out of alinement with each other and extend longitudinally of the tie so that one end of each plate will overlie the base flange 7 of the rail for holding it in the seat B in the tie.
Formed in the tie A and opening through the longer edges of the same and at opposite sides of the seat B therein are slots 8 which intersect the seats 6 for the plates 5 and are adapted to receive bolt members 9 which are passed through the plates 5 and carry at their upper ends nuts 10 threaded thereon for the fastening of the plates in the seats and in clamping relation to the rail, the heads 11 of the bolts working against washers which, together with the heads, are confined within a recess 12, the walls of which engage the wrench surfaces of the head 11 so as to prevent the turning of the bolt member 9 when inserted in the slots 8 and engaged with the plates 5 so that the nuts can be tightened on the bolt members for the firm or secure fastening of the rail to the tie.
When it is desired to remove the rail the nuts 10 are removed from the bolt members 9 and are struck to remove the same from the plates 5 so that the latter will be free for detachment, thus permitting the removal of the rail, should the occasion require.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of use of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is:
The combination with a rail, of a tie comprising a body formed from concrete having a transverse channel in its upper face to accommodate the rail and also having slots in its sides intersecting the channel at diagonally opposite corners thereof, the said slots terminating at the bottom of the body in recesses, headed bolt members inserted in the slots with their heads confined within the recesses, clamping plates engaged on the bolt members to overlap the base of the rail and to lie flush with the upper face of the body, and nuts threaded on the bolt members for securing the clamping plates in their relative positions.
In testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
