UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARNOLD J. PATTEN, OF ELLSWOR'IH, MAINE.
MUFFLER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARNOLD J. PATTEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ellsworth, in the county of Hancock and State of lvfaine, have invented new and useful Improvements in hlufflers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mufflers for internal combustion motors, the object in view being to provide an efficient water cooled muffler, the construction of which insures a continuous flow of water along the inner walls of the mu'filer, so as to maintain the same in a cool condition, the water being so spread after its entrance into the muffler that the exhaust gas between the point of admission and the point of discharge thereof is encompassed by a film of water which also has the effect of deadening or muffling the sound of the exhaust, thereby adding to the efficiency of the muffler in the main function thereof.
-With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a view, showing the muffler in elevation and applied to an ordinary internal combustion motor. Fig. 2 is an enlarged diametrical section through the muffler.
The muffler contemplated in this invention may be made of any size and capacity in accordance with the engine in connection 'with which it is to be used. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the mufller comprises a substantially cylindrical receptacle 1 closed at both ends by heads 2 and 3.
In carrying out the present invention, I provide in the upper end of the muffler a combined water spreader and exhaust baffle 4, the same being shown conveniently in the form of a disk-shaped plate. The plate 4; is arranged to extend across the water inlet 6 which enters the head of the muffler, and in this way the water is spread outward in an annular spray by the plate 4 and caused to move downwardly along the inner Specification of Letters Patent.

walls of the muffler body, at the bottom of which is arranged a water outlet or drain 7.
The exhaust pipe 8 from the motor leads into the muffler through one side thereof, and is provided with an elbow or nozzle 9 arranged wholly within the body of the muffler and extending upwardly, so as to discharge in the direction of or against the bottom side of the combined spreader and baffle plate l.
10 designates the exhaust outlet which leads outward from one side of the muffler body and may be arranged at any con venient point in the length or height thereof.
If desired, the muffler may be made up in sectional form, as illustrated in Fig. 2, in which the elbow or nozzle 9 is threaded upon the inner end of the pipe 12 inserted through the side of the muffler body, said pipe forming or being adapted to receive the exhaust pipe from the motor. The outlet 10 may also consist of a threaded nipple adapted to receive an exhaust pipe for discharging the gas at a suitable point from or beyond the muffler. The combined spreader and bafile plate 4: may be made separately from the body of the muffler, and may be connected to a removable head 2 by means of screws or bolts 13, around which are placed spacing sleeves 14:. The head 2 may be threaded, as shown, and screwed into the head of the muffler, and also provided with a circumferential flange 15 to make the same tight, and further provided with a nut-like extension 16 adapted to receive a wrench, for the purpose of removing and replacing the head of the muffler.
hat is claimed is:
A muffler for internal combustion engines, comprising a cylindrical shell forming an expansion chamber closed at one end, a de tachable head having a threaded connection with the opposite end of the shell, a water inlet connection threaded through the center of said head, a gas inlet connection threaded through an opening in the cylindrical wall of the shell, an elbow threaded on the inner end of the gas inlet connection and positioned to discharge toward the water inlet connection, an outlet connection threaded through the cylindrical wall of the shell, a spreader disk interposed between the discharge end of said elbow and the water inlet and positioned eencentrieally of the cylindrical wall of the shell, fasteners connecting said spreader disk to the de taehable head, and spacing sleeves around! said fasteners between the head and disk.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
