MUFFLER FOR INTERNAL-COMBUSTION MOTORS.
To all whom itmay concern Be it known that I, MERTON ROY Grrrrze, citizen of the United States, residing at Prairie Grove, in the county of Washington and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'Mufflers for Internal-Combustion Motors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in exhaust mufliers for internal combustion motors.
One. object of the invention is to provide a mufiier in which the exhaust gases resultin from the explosions of the motor will be di used in passing through the Inuflier and will thus be caused to discharge silently therefrom. 1
Another object is to provide a muffler of this character which will be simple, strong, durable and inexpensive in construction, eilicient and reliable and in which there will be practically no back pressure.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a central longitudinal sect-ion of my improved mutfler; Fig.2-'is an end elevation of one end thereof; Fig. 3 is a cross section taken on the line3-3 of Fig. '1.
In the embodiment of the invention, I pro vide a cylinder 1 which may be of any suitable length and diameter and open at its ends as shown. The open ends of the cylinder are closed by convex heads or saps 2 and 3 which fit over the ends of the cylinder and are firmly secured in position thereon by a central longitudinally-disposed tie rod or bolt {.t which extends through the center of the caps or heads and through the center of the cylinder as shown. One end of the bolt or head 4 is provided with a head which engages the outer side of the cap 2 while the other end of the rod or bolt has thereon a nut 5 which is screwed up into engagement with the outer end of the head 3 and thereby clamps the heads into engagement with the ends of the cylinder. -end thereof is an inclined bafiie or deflecting plate 10 which extends from one side to the other of the cylinder and inwardly to a point a slight distance beyond the center of the cylinder as shown. The inner edge of the battle plate 10 is preferably curved or turned inwardly as shown. The outer portion of the plate is braced and securely fastened to the inner sides of the cylinder by short lugs 1.1 which are riveted or otherwise firmly secured to the side of the cylinder as shown. In the opposite end of the cylinderand extending inwardly from the opposite side thereof from the baffle plate 10 is a battle plate 1-2. The plate 12 extends inwardly to a slight distance beyond the center of the cylinder and has its inner edge turned outwardly toward the adjacent end of the cylinder as shown. The plate 12 is fastened near its outer edge to the opposite sides of the cylinder by lugs 13 which are riveted or otherwise secured to the inner side of the cylinder. Between the outer ballic plates 10 and 12 are arranged intermediate battle plates 14 and 15 which are spaced equal distances apart and from the plates 10 and 12 as shown. wardly from opposite sides of the cylinder and to points slightly beyond the center of the cylinder, said plates being inclined in opposite directions. The plates 14 and 15 are secured near their inner edges to the sides of the cylinder by lugs 16 which are riveted or otherwise fastened to the cylinder as shown. By constructing my improved muilier as form the tortuous passage through the motor will not however cause any perceptible back pressure of the gases passing therethrough.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood with out requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the a principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as claimed.
v Having thus described my invention, What I claim is:
1. In an automobile mufiier of the character described, the combination of a tubular gas receiving receptacle having inlet and exhaust openings at its opposite ends, baffle plates arranged .within said-,,chamber, said plates having therein openings registering with the axial center of the latter, attaching lugs arranged in triangular relation on said plates, curely fastened within said chamber and are- 1 tering with said axial extending whereby the latter may be se-- sufliciently reinforced to withstand the expandmg'force of the entering gas, and a tie rod extending centrally and longitudinally through said chamber and through the opening in said battle plates. whereby said plates may be further braced to resist the force of said gases. v
2. In an automobile muiller of the character described, the combination of a tubular gas receiving receptacle having inlet and ex- .haust openings at its opposite ends, outer battle plates arranged within said chamber adjacent its opposite ends and projecting inwardly in opposite directions beyond the axial center thereof, said plates having their free ends curved whereby the direction of the expanding gases .may be reversed and directed to the walls of said chamber, inner bafiie plates arranged intermediate said outer battle plates and projecting inwardly in opposite directions beyond the axial center of said chamber, said inner and outer battle plates having therein openings regiscenter, attaching lugs arranged in triangular relation on said plates, whereby the latter may be securely fastened within said chamber and sufliciently reinforced to w'thstand the expanding force of the entering gas, and a tie rod centrally and longitudinally through said chamber and through the opening in said baffle plates, whereby the latter may be further braced to resist the force of said gases.
