Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 9, 1910. Serial No. 576,411.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD H. CALAWAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Junction, in the county of Piute and State of Utah, have invented new and useful Improvements in Punching-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in machines such as are usually employed to form openings in sheet metal and has for its object the provision of a device of that kind presenting a neat and compact structure embodying comparatively few parts constructed with a View of obtaining a maximum power with a minimum ofsize.
Another object is the provision of a means for retracting the punch from the opening formed in the metal.
With these and other objects in view, which will more fully hereinafter appear, the present invention consists in certain novel details of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of the device may be made, within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of the specification, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout.
The supporting frame is designated by the numeral 5 and is formed of an oblon piece of suitable metal cast or otherwise formed into the shape shown. The supporting frame is provided adjacent to its opposite ends with openings to receive bolts or other suitable securing means for attachment to a wall or other support.
Formed integral or otherwise secured to the front face of the supporting frame and extending longitudinally of the same are guide plates 6, said guide plates being considerably less in length than the length of the supporting frame and extending from the medial portion of the latter to a point adjacent the upper end thereof. Between the guide plates 6 are the spacer blocks 6 which are connected to said plates by means of the bolts 6.
A bed die-designated by the numeral 8 is formed integral or otherwise secured to the front face of the supporting frame 5 and at a point below the lower end of the guide plates 6, the openingof said bed die being in axial alinement with the bore of the plates 6. Slidingly fitted in the bore of the plates 6 1s a plunger 9, the said plunger being noncylindrical in contour andcorresponding in length approximately to the length of the plates, the lower end of said plunger being provided with an axial opening to receive a punch 10, the said punch being removably secured in the plunger by means. of a set ,screw 11 screwed into an opening in the front side and adjacent to the lower end of the plunger 9. The upper end of the plunger 9 is provided with a transverse semicircular seat 12, in which is arranged a {oller 13, the function of which will appear ater.
An operating lever is shown which in cludes a shank portion designated by the numeral 14, the said shank having one end ending in a substantially circular-shaped head 15, the said head being arranged in the opening 7 at the upper end of the plates and having an eccentrically disposed opening for the reception of a pivot pin 16, the opposite ends of which are arranged in alining openings formed in the sides of the plates 6 and adjacent to the upper end thereof. A portion of the rounded surface of the head bears on the roller 13, and owing to the eccentric, mounting of the lever it will be manifest when the same is turned in one direction and the portion of the periphery farthest from the pivot pin 16 bears on the roller 13, the plunger will be moved down- Patented J an. 13, 1914.
wardly to its full extent, the punch thereof 1 With the arms 17 and 18. Connection between these arms is established by means of a pair of helical retractile springs 21 and 22. Vith this construction it will be manifest when the plunger moves downwardly and outwardly the springs 21 and 22 will be tensioned, and when the lever is moved so as to bring the portion of its periphery nearest to the pivot pin 16 to a position adjacent to the roller 13, the tension of the springs will be suflicient to move the plunger upwardly and maintain the roller in engagement with the periphery of the head 15.
From the foregoing, it is evident that I have provided a device which is comparatively simple in structure and inexpensive in manufacture, embodying few parts and these so arranged that the danger of derangementwill be reduced to a minimum.
I claim In combination, an elongated substantially rectangular vertically disposed frame, spaced guide plates formed integral with said frame and extending from a point central to a point adjacent the upper end thereof, a plunger slidable between the guide plates and having a recessed upper end, a roller arranged in said recess, a lever having a cam actuated surface pivoted between said guide plates, said guide plates being cut away at their upper ends to permit the cam surface of said lever to be operatively associated with said roller and plunger, a stationary arm extending transversely through said guide plates adjacent their upper end and having curved extremities, a second movable arm extended transversely through the lower end of said plunger and having oppositely curved extremities, retractile springs having their opposite ends secured to the curved portions of said upper and lower transversely disposed arm, and a die secured to the frame below said plunger and guide plates.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
