Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Farm W. ROBINSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Towanda, in the county of Bradford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and usefullmprovements in Hand-Operated Cold-Punches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hand operated cold punches for the use of blacksmiths, the primary. object of the invention being to provide a tool of this character by means of which holes in metallic parts'may be easily and quickly made, and also to provide a tool which may be economically manufactured and sold and which is of a special advantage for use in repair work.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hand operated cold punch embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are fragmentary sections on the line 44 of Fig. 2, showing the plunger in different positions. Fig. 7 is a horizontal transverse section on the line 77 of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the anvil head. Fig. 9 is a similar view of the anvil die.
In carrying my invention into practice I provide an upright frame 1 of suitable construction and provided with or mounted upon a suitable base 2. Secured to said frame are upper and lower horizontal forwardly projecting brackets 3 and 4, connected by the front and rear vertical reinforcing bars 5 and 6, the said parts being bolted, riveted or otherwise properly connected.
The front reinforcing bar 5 is provided with upper and lower forwardly extending guide loops 7 and 8, through which is arranged to reciprocate a follower or plunger 9, comprising a bar arranged to slide in contact with the forward surface of the bar 5 and carrying at its lower end a chuck 10 to receive a tapered punch 11 detachably secured therein by means of a set screw 12. The said follower or plunger 9 is maintained in guided contact with the front surface of the bar 5 by means of a set screw 13, which may be adjusted at any time to maintain the follower in guiding position and to take up any loose play due to wear. The punch 11 is fitted to move vertically in a slotted guide plate and work holder 14, comprising a plate of suitable form carried by a bar 15 fastened to the bars 5 and 6, said plate being disposed above and in spaced relation to the anvil die 16. This die is provided with a hole 17 for the reception of the punch on its working stroke, and is preferably in the form of an inverted U-shaped body fitting within a transverse slot 18 in an anvil body or head 19 formed upon the forward portion of the bracket 3. As shown said anvil body or head is provided with a vertical passage'for the discharge of the material punched from the work, and the arms of the anvil die extend downwardly on opposite sides of said head and are provided with set screws 21 whereby the die is detachably clamped in position. A leg or brace 22 extends upwardly from the base 2 and is connected with or in bearing contact with the bracket 3 to stay and reinforce the same against depression during the operation of the punch upon the work. In practice the piece of metal or work to be punched is inserted into the space between the anvil die and member 14 and rests upon the die and head, the punch on its down stroke piercing the work and forming a hole of the desired contour therein, the work being held against upward movement and released from the punch by contact with the member 14 on the upward or retractive movement of the punch.
The mechanism for operating the follower or plunger bar 9 comprises a hand lever 25 provided at its normally lower end with a cam or eccentric portion 24 which is fitted within a slot or bifurcation in the forward end of the bracket 4 and pivotally mounted 7 upon a cross pin or bolt 26, whereby the lever is adapted to be moved downwardly and forwardly on its working stroke from a normally upright position, and to be swung upwardly and rearwardly back to such position on its retractive stroke. The cam or eccentric 24 is adapted on the working stroke of the lever to engage the rear end of the follower or plunger bar 9 to force the same downward and transmit corresponding motion to the punch. Extending laterally from the follower or plunger bar are pivot screws or studs 27 which engage straight longitudinal slots 28 formed in the straight lower ends of links 29, said links having upwardly and rearwardly curved upper ends 30 which are pivoted to the lever above the pivotal connection 26, as indicated at 31. The links have at their lower ends guiding extensions 32 beyond the slotted portions thereof, which guiding extensions ride in contact with the sides of the guide loop 8, whereby said links are caused to move in a determined path and lateral play or deflection thereof prevented.
The links act as motion transmitting members, having through the studs 27' and slots 28 a slip joint or lost-motion connection with. the follower or plunger bar whereby the lever is adapted to have a preliminary upward movement to gain increased power before retracting the follower or plunger bar, while it is at the same time permitted on its working stroke to have a continuous power engagement with said follower or plunger bar to insure operation of the punch under a continuous powerful leverage. It will be seen by reference to Fig. ithat when the parts are in normal position the cam or eccentric 24 lies in contact with the upper end of the follower 9, so that when the lever is moved downwardly and forwardly on its working stroke the follower will be positively and continuously moved downward to force the punch through the work, the slot ted portions of the links in this operation allowing downward motion of said links for an idle action, in which motion the studs 27 pass from the lower to the upper ends of the slots 28. On the upward movement of the lever, however, the cam or eccentric 24 is raised out of contact with the follower 9 and the links travel upwardly with the lever,
to the extent permitted by the slots 28, or until the studs 27 engage the lower ends of said slots, whereupon the lever, which has made a preliminary portion of its retractive movement, is positively connected with the follower on the remainder of its upward or retractive movement and elevates the follower, thus withdrawing the punch from engagement with the work. Hence it will be understood that a preliminary upward movement of the lever from aposition substantially on center is permitted so that a proper degree of leverage power may be transmitted to lift the plunger and pull the punch out of engagement with the work,
thereby preventing the parts from binding and securing a more eilicient releasing action. When the lever is returned to normal position, the curved ends of the links overhang the bifurcated end of the bracket 4 and thus serve to automatically lock or oppose a sufficient resistance to the movement of the lever to prevent the lever and plunger from dropping down, whereby said parts are normally maintained in a retractive position until positively actuated.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the constructionand mode of operation of my improved hand operated cold punch will be readily un derstood, and it will be seen that the invention provides a simple and inexpensive, and yet powerful device of this character which may be easily and conveniently operated. By this use metal parts may be punched to form holes of' a desired size with much less labor and in less time than the work can be done by the ordinary process of drilling, and in practice the device will be found especially useful in repair work, where considerable punching must be done and the saving of time and labor is a considerable factor.
I claim:
A device of the character described comprising a support including a guide bar and a guide loop, an adjustable guide member carried by the loop, a follower movable through the loop and in contact with the guide bar, said follower being adjustable by said adjustable guide member to main tain it in contact with the guide member, a punch carried by said follower, an anvil on the support, a lever fulcrumed to the support above and in line with the follower and having a cam end to bear thereon, said lever being movable in a fore-and-aft direction,'lateral projecting studs upon the follower, and links having curved ends pivoted to the lever above and beyond the fulcrum thereof and having straight and slotted ends engaging said studs, substantially as set forth.
