Description

A. MARCUS.
REINFORCEMENT FOB. BASKETS. APPLIOATION FILED AUG. 24, 1912.

WITNESSES: a a r llNlTElU $TATEE INT @Fldlfill.
ADOLPH MARCUS, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
REINFORCEMENT FOR BASKETS.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Anonrn Minions, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reinforcement for Baskets, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to means for preventing the breaking of the handles and bottoms of market-baskets.
The style of market-basket generally known as a split-basket is in extensive use despite its frangibility, on accol'lnt of its lightness and low cost. Retail dealers make extensive use of them for delivery purposes, as their customers frequently desire that the basket be left, with the order, and they can not well decline to accede to the request. And as the baskets are seldom returned they cannot afford to use an e):- pensivc basket. But losses sustained by damage to orders in course of delivery, due to breaking of handles, separation thereof from the body of the basket or the breakingout of the bottom, increases the cost of delivery by such baskets to a point that i. t. matter of some moment.
An object of this invention is to provide a reinforcement that will render this class of baskets trustworthy in delivery service, preventing losses due to their breakage, and that may be readily removed when it is desired to leave the basket with a customer, and that may be readily applied to another basket.
A further object is to provide a reinforcement that may be so cheaply constructed as to permit of its universal use.
"With the foregoing objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction hereinafter set forth, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, that forms a part of this specification, in which Figure 1, is a side elevation and Fig. 2, an end elevation of a basket with my invention applied; Fig. 3 being a perspective of the band.
Referring to the drawing in which like reference numerals indicate like parts in the different views; 1 indicates a flexible band, that may be of any suitable material, but

preferably of what is known as hoop steel. Near one end of the band a stud, or pin, 2 is erected, which may be a separate piece riveted in or it may be formed up out of the body of the band. Near the opposite end of the band a plurality of perforations 3, 3 are provided that are adapted to engage over the pin 2, when the band is bent over and the ends superimposed. A clasp 4, comprising a band, or wire, is bent around the band 1 and adapted to slide thercalong to engage, and hold the superimposed ends when a perforation is engaged over the pin 2 and prevent. displacement thereof. The pin 2 will prevent the clasp sliding off the band when the ends thereof are not engaged. A. phn'ality of members 5, 5 are arranged transversely of the band 1., being secured thereto by suitable means such as rivets (S. The clips 53 extend bevond the edges of the band a distance sufficient to allow of their being bent down at an angle thereto, in position to engage the edge of the handle 7 of a basket 8 when the band is in place thereon.
In adjusting the band for service it will be placed under the bottom of a basket, up around the sides and over the handle, drawn taut, and one of the perforations engaged over the pin, the clasp slid over the superin'lposed end of the band, the clips 5 bent down and engaged under the handle. The clips 5 prevent the band from slipping off the handle and the tensile strength of the band takes care of any load that may be placed in the basket.
ll aving describtal my invention so that any one may make and use the same, I claim 1. ln combination with a basket and the handle thereof, a band encircling said basket and handle, means for connecting the ends of the band and clips extending laterally from the band to engage with said handle to prevent lateral movement of the band thereon.
2. In combination with a basket, a handle attached thereto and extending thereabove, a flexible metallic band adapted to be encircled about said basket and over said handle, said band having a protuberance near one end thereof and being provided with a perforation near the other end adapted to be engaged over said protuberbear against each 'sideof the handle and preance, a slide on said band adapted to engage vent lateral movement of the band thereon. over the superimposed end of the band and ADOLPH MARCUS retain said perforation in engagement with the protuberance, lugs depending from the Witnesses:
edges of that portion of the band that over- W. B. MUNNELL,
lies said handle, said lugs being adapted to WM. J. SAUER.
