JOHN A. BECK, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
PACKAGEFEDGE PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 23, 1914;.
Application filed December 18, 1913. Serial No. 807,367.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN A. Pack, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Package-Edge Protectors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a package edge protector and has for its chief objectthe provision of a protector in the form of a metal clip which when inserted beneath the cord at the corner or edge of a package can be quickly and easily fastened or attached to the cord in such a manner that there is no danger of the clip being displaced or of slipping from beneath the cord so as to leave the corner or edge of the package unprotected.
The clip which I have provided is prefer-- ably formed from pliable sheet metal and is adapted to be bent in the middle so as to form side portions at right angles to each other, one or each of said side portions being provided along its outer side edge with a tongue so disposed that it can be bent up over and around the cord to fasten together the clip and cord.
My invention may be further briefly summarized as consisting in certain novel de tails of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be described in the specification and set forth in the appended claims.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a package or of a group of packages tied with a cord, the edges being protected by my improved clips; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the clip, the same being shown on an enlarged scale, one of the tongues being bent in the form of a loop, as when bent around the cord.
The clip 10 embodying my invention is preferably stamped from pliable non-elastic thin sheet metal, such as tin, and is bent along the center line forming two side portions which are at right angles to each other, and which are adapted to fit over the edge of a package, beneath the cord which is tied about the package.
In order that the clip may be attached to the cord so that it will be prevented from slipping from beneath the cord, it is provided preferably along both side edges with tongues 11 which normally lie in the planes ofthe side portions of the clip, each tongue be ng separated from the body of the clip or ad acent side portion thereof by a slot 12. After the clip is slipped beneath the cord 13, which is tied or is about to be tied around the package 14, with the clip fitting of course over the edge of the package, if the tongues are bent up around the cord, the clip is attached to the cord on the two sides of the clip, and it is thus held from slipping from beneath the cord. The fact that the clip is formed from thin pliable non-elastic material permits the tongues to be readily bent up around the cord, and causes them to remain about the cord when so bent.
The clip can be easily applied beneath the cord since the tongues lie in the same plane with the side portions of the clip, and after the clip is in place, the tongues can be very readily bent around the cord, for the reason that the tongues are at the extreme sides of the clip, and are separated therefrom by the slots 12, and hence the said tongues can be grasped with the finger and bent around the cord into a loop-form without trouble or waste of time.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A package edge protector comprising a clip formed from pliable metal and having parts bent at right angles to each other, said clip being provided along its side edges with a pair of tongues, each normally lying in the plane of one of the side portions and adapted to be bent up around the cord extending about a package.
2. A package edge protector comprising a clip formed from pliable sheet metal and having portions bent at right angles, said portions being provided along their outer side edges with straight fiat tongues each normally lying in the plane of one of said side portions and separated therefrom by a s 0t.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN A. PEOK.
