Abstract

The underground chamber (1) may be below the bottom either of the sea or a lake (2), and water enters it via a tunnel (8) to drive turbines (6) with electrical generators and heat pumps (9) by day, water is pumped back at night from the chamber where it has been collected following passage through the turbines and evaporators of the heat pumps. The composite power station operates during daytime hours at the customary higher unit rate for electricity generation and feeds it to the grid, together with heat energy to a remote heating mains. At night, when a lower unit rate applies, the turbines are driven backwards as pumps by the generators, which in turn act as motors driven from the mains. Heat pump evaporators (10a) are located in the input tunnel to the turbines, above (10b) the water magazine, or inside (10c) the latter.
