Abstract

A method of making an item of footwear comprising an outsole 203, connection member 202 and an upper 201, the method comprising the step of securing the outsole and the connection member using ultrasonic welding. The outsole and connection member are preferably formed from thermoplastic material, and the ultrasonic sealing may be carried out at a frequency in the range of 15000 to 20000Hz. The upper is preferably secured to the connection member by stitching. Also claimed is ultrasonic apparatus for making an item of footwear comprising a first, rigid, foot shaped mould 10 for receiving a connection member; a second concave mould 30 for receiving the outsole; means for connecting the connection member and outsole and means for welding the connection member and outsole together.
