Abstract
PURPOSE:To stably obtain the title high-purity quaternary ammonium hydroxide by supplying a quaternary ammonium salt into the salt soln. chamber in a cell formed by an anion-exchange membrane provided between an anode and a cathode and plural cation-exchange membranes, and electrolyzing the salt. CONSTITUTION:Plural cation-exchange membranes C are arranged between the cathode 2 and the anode 3 on the cathode 2 side. An anion-exchange membrane A is arranged on the anode 3 side. The electrolytic cell 1 is formed with the cathode chamber 5 provided with the cathode 2, an intermediate chamber 6, the salt soln. chamber 7, and an anode chamber 9 provided with the anode 3. The electrolytic cell 1 is used, quaternary ammonium hydroxide is obtained in the cathode chamber, the intermediate chamber 6 contains an electrolyte consisting essentially of quaternary ammonium hydroxide, the salt soln. chamber 7 contains a quaternary ammonium salt, and the anode chamber 9 contains an aq. acidic soln. A DC current is applied between the electrodes 2 and 3, and electrolysis is carried out.
