Abstract

PURPOSE:To carry out the electrolysis in a safe condition by bringing the internal pressure of a cathode chamber to higher than that of an anode chamber in electrolyzing the aqueous alkali chloride solution in an electrolytic tank using a cation exchange membrane and an expansible anode. CONSTITUTION:If the internal pressure of the cathode chamber is higher than that of the anode chamber in the electrolytic tank and the difference thereof becomes high, the tank voltage is raised to generate the permanent deformation in the expansible anode and the cation exchange membrane is damaged occasionally. To prevent this phenomena, the pressure of the anode chamber is pref. increased by 50-300mm. (water column) higher than that of the cathode chamber. The pressure difference is carried out by regulating the height of an effluent port of an electrolyzing solution. Moreover, according to circumstances, an anode shrinkage regulating plate (stopper) is used. This stopper 8 is welded to an anode leading rod 3 and provided at a place contacted with an anode plate 9 of an anode rib 5 welded with the anode plate 9 and one end thereof is welded and other end provides a gap between it and the rib 5.
