Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound used as a dehydrogenating agent in good yield, by treating 2,3-dicyanohydroquinone with manganese dioxide in an aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid. CONSTITUTION:Manganese dioxide (e.g. industrial manganese dioxide or electrolytic manganese dioxide) is added and reacted with 2,3-dicyanohydroquinone (hereinafter abbreviated to DCHQ) in the presence of an aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid while being stirred according to the reaction formulas to afford 2,3-dicyano-5,6-dichlorobenzoquinone (hereinafter abbreviated to DDQ). The reaction is carried out by using water in an amount of 0-1,000pts.wt. based on 100pts.wt. DCHQ and hydrochloric acid in 35% concentration in an amount of >=400pts.wt. based on 100pts.wt. DCHQ. The manganese dioxide is desirably used in somewhat excess of the equimolar reaction amount and the reaction is slowly carried out while keeping the solution temperature of the reaction mixture at 30-80 deg.C. Furthermore, the addition of concentrated nitric acid in a small amount in adding the organic solvent is effective in stabilizing the formed DDQ.
