Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve wear resistance of a sliding member by piling a nitride layer and a hard chrome galvanized layer on base metal in case of construction of the sliding member such as a piston ring, etc. CONSTITUTION:A titanium nitride layer 4 and a porus chrome galvanized layer 5 are formed in order on the outer circumference of a cast iron base member 3 to construct a piston ring 1. The titanium nitride layer 4 is formed by reactive ion plating on the base member 3 and the porus chrome galvanized layer 5 is formed by a usual treatment. The nitride layer on the piston ring is protected by the surface side chrome galvanized layer during a finishing treatment so that it is not shaved off partially. Consequently, even if the chrome galvanized layer is worn, wear resistance/anti-scuffing of the piston ring can be kept by the nitride layer for a long term.
