Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide a magnetic recording medium which is improved in short wavelength output and practicable durability with good balance by providing a protective layer consisting of amorphous carbon and oily polymer formed continuously on a thin ferromagnetic metallic film. CONSTITUTION:A fine particle coating layer 5 dispersed and fixed with fine particles at a high density is formed on a high-polymer film 4 and the thin ferromagnetic metallic film 6 is formed thereon. The protective layer 7 consisting of the amorphous carbon film and the oily polymer is continuously formed on the thin ferromagnetic metallic film 6 in such a manner that the formation of the amorphous carbon film and the formation of the oily polymer are independently controlled. Since the amorphous carbon and the oily polymer synergistically improve the lubricating effect, the amorphous carbon is formed thinner and the spacing loss is decreased. The practicable durability is thus increased without sacrificing the short wavelength output.
