Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the subject fiber for reinforcement, obtained by covering an E-glass fiber with a PVA or the like, and subjecting the covered glass fiber to heat treatment, capable of providing a fiber-reinforced phenol resin having a large strength by rapidly hardening at a low temperature. CONSTITUTION: The objective glass fiber is obtained by imparting >=0.01 wt.%, preferably 0.5-5 wt.% PVA or polyvinyl acetate expressed in terms of solid to a fiber bundle, a mat-like material or the like of an E-glass fiber to form a resin layer on the surface of the fiber, and subjecting the fiber with the formed resin layer to a heat treatment at >=130 deg.C, preferably 150-600 deg.C to provide the objective glass fiber. The problem of reduction of a hardening rate caused when the E-glass fiber is used for reinforcement of a phenol resin containing an acidic hardening agent, especially a sulfonic acid, is solved by using the coated glass fiber.
