Abstract

PURPOSE:To increase an input operation range even when the variable gain range of a variable gain amplifying circuit is decreased, by interposing and connecting a saturating and amplifying circuit between the input of the variable gain amplifying circuit and the output of a variable gain photodetector like an avalanche photodiode APD. CONSTITUTION:When the level of light incident to an APD1 from an optical signal input terminal 10 is below a value L1, a saturating and amplifying circuit 6 is set in a linear operation range, and the gain of a variable gain amplifying circuit 2 is maximized and unchanged; and a control circuit 3 varies the amplification factor of the APD1 corresponding to variation in incident light level to keep the output signal peak of a receiving circuit constant. Since the circuit 3 exercises control so that the APd1 does not decrease below a lower-limit amplification factor, a control circuit 4 controls the gain of the circuit 2 in the ranges of values L1 and L2, and the circuit 6 is in linear operation. In a range above the value L2, the circuit 6 is saturated to make its output amplitude constant regardless of the incident light level.
