Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain the titled display element having a high response speed by interposing a blocking layer, which disallows ions and neutral atoms to pass through it, between lamination layers each consisting a solid electrolyte layer and an electrochromic material layers. CONSTITUTION:Electrochromic display units consisting of solid electrolyte layers 1 and 1' and electrochromic material layers 2 and 2' are used and between those display element units, a blocking layer 3 which will not transmit ions and neutral atoms is interposed. In such multilayered display elements, two HxWO3s are formed each time one carrier is applied from an electrode E1, so the quantity of Coulomb energy required for coloring is reduced to a half the usual one. Further, insulator layers 4 and 4' can be provided between electrolyte layers 1 and 1' and electrochromic material layers 2 and 2', and those layer will not transmit holes h<+> and electrons e<-> to suppress the application of holes h<+> to the electrochromic material layers, thereby improving the application efficiency of H<+> ions.
