Abstract
PURPOSE:To achieve a separator for an alkali cell having excellent alkali- withstandability, oxidation-withstandability and the electrolyte reservability by impregnating and coating the web composed of the polyolefin synthetic fiber having the fiber diameter shorter than 5mum or the partially formalized polyvinyl alcohol with hydrophilic polymer then drying it. CONSTITUTION:The separator for an alkali cell is employing the web composed of the synthetic fiber having excellent alkali-withstandability as the substrate, thereby excellent initial and long term alkali-withstandability is provided and never dissolved by the strong alkali electrolyte and causes no deterioration of the strength. While since quite thin fiber having the fiber diameter shorter than 5mum is employed, the liquid sucking force due to the capillerity is high while the reservability of the electrolyte is high and the reserving amount will be high. Furthermore since the web is treated by the hydrophilic polymer liquid the hydrophilic performance of the electrolyte to the web is increased to increase the permeating speed of the electrolyte while to increase the reserving amount of the electrolyte thereby even when the oxygen or hydrogen gas produced through the cell reaction will intrude to the separator the electrolyte is never removed from the separator by said gas.
