Abstract

PURPOSE: To remove COD component in good efficiency by passing waste water containing a specipic amount or less of BOD component and suspended substance as well as the COD component through an activated carbon fixing layer into which an oxygen containing gas is introduced from the lower part thereof in a downwardly flowing direction.
CONSTITUTION: Waste water containing 5 mg/l or less BOD component, 5mg/l or less suspended substance and the COD component is passed through an activated carbon fixing tank as well as an oxygen containing gas such as the air or the like is introduced thereinto from the lower part of the activated carbon fixing layer therein to remove the COD component in waste water. The operation for introducing the oxygen containing gas is pref. carried out according to a continuous system but may be carried intermittently if the activated carbon fixing layer is maintained under a substantially aerobic condition and, by passing water to be treated in a downwardly flowing direction under an aerobic condition, adsorption and concn. of the COD component and effective biological decomposition of the COD component are enabled.
