Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve sealing performance of a vacuum seal and to facilitate manufacture of the same, by arranging seal plates on the outlet side of a stator having a seal consisting of a helical groove in the manner that they are held in contact with a magnet, and forming a narrow space having a magnetic fluid charged hermetically therein between the inner peripheral surfaces of the seal plates and the outer surface of a rotor. CONSTITUTION:A sealing apparatus of this invention is constituted by disposing seal plates 5 near the end face of a stator 2 on the low-pressure side of a seal consisting of a helical groove, in the manner that it is fixed in place by a retainer 6 on the opposite sides of an annular magnet 4 having N-pole at one side and S-pole at the other side, forming a narrow space between a rotor 1 and the inner peripheral surfaces of the seal plates 5, and charging a magnet fluid 3 into the narrow space. Since, with such an arrangement, the magnetic fluid 3 is retained in the narrow space by the function of a magnetic loop constituted by the magnet 4, seal plates 5 and rotor 1, gases on the opposite sides of the seal can be isolated from each other and the seal can be designed by considering the gas in the helical groove as molecular flow. Therefore, it is enabled to increase the clearance between the rotor 1 and stator 2, to facilitate disigning and manufacture of the shaft and bearings, and to reduce troubles such as seizure of the shaft.
