Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:The titled compound of formula I (R is lower alkyl or aryl).
EXAMPLE: 1-p-Toluenesulfonyloxy-5-hexyne.
USE: A raw material for preparing pentoxifylline [chemical name: 1-(5'-oxohexyl)- 3,7-dimethylxanthine] useful as a vasodilator and an enhancer for hematocytolysis. The compound of formula I is capable of giving petoxifylline via 1-(5'-hexynyl)- 3,7-dimethylxanthine readily and in high yield.
PROCESS: 5-Hexyn-1-ol is reacted with a sulfonyl halide of formula II (X is halogen) in the presence of a base at -30W50°C to afford the compound of formula I. A tertiary amine, e.g. pyridine, is preferably used as the base.
