Abstract
PURPOSE: To inexpensively obtain high quality goethite without corroding equipment by aging an alkaline suspension prepared by mixing an aqueous soln. contg. Fe2+ as a principal component with an oxidizing agent for oxidizing Fe2+ to Fe3+ and alkali and by heat-treating the aged suspension.
CONSTITUTION: To an aqueous soln. contg. ferrous ion of FeSO4 or the like as a principal component is gradually added an oxidizing agent such as H2O2 or NaClO3 for oxidizing ferrous ion to ferric ion, and a soln. of NaOH or other alkali is added with stirring in a slight excess such as about 1W10% excess over the amount required for neutralization. The resulting suspension is held at 20W40, preferably ordinary temp. for 3W20hr while continuing gentle stirring. The suspension thus aged is then heated to a temp. from 70°C to the boiling state and maintained for 5W10hr. It turns yellow, and goethite synthesis is completed.
