Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide ferromagnetic powder which is improved in the resistance to magnetic force and in the magnetic stability, and which is produced by heat-treating magnetic iron oxide powder coated with compounds containing cobalt and iron ions in an antioxdizing atmosphere.
CONSTITUTION: A solution containing cobalt and ferrous iron ions (such as cobalt sulfate and ferrous sulfate) is added to water in which ferromagnetic iron oxide powder (γ-Fe2O3) is dispersed. The amount of cobalt is 0.5 to 10% by atom of the total iron, and the amount of the ferrous iron ions is no more than 50% by atom of the total iron. Then to the obtained slurry is added an aqueous NaOH solution to render the slurry to be an alkalinity of 0.5 to 2N. The mixture is heated to react at 60 to 120°C for 5 minutes to 4 hours, cooled, washed with water and dried to obtain ferromagnetic powder coated with the compounds of cobalt and ferrous ions. Up to the washing stage the procedures must be carried out in an antioxidizing atmosphere. Finally, the magnetic powder is processed to be heated at 120 to 250°C for 30 minutes to 3 hours in a N2 atmosphere.
