Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the exhaust gas cleaning device in which the rate of temperature rise of a catalyst is fast even when an automobile is started up or a petroleum burner is ignited by providing a heating element provided with the catalyst supported by a honeycomb-shaped ceramic heater whose surface is subjected to an electric insulating treatment in a passage of the exhaust gas.
CONSTITUTION: The surface of a catalyst carrier composed primarily of silicon carbide is provided with an electric insulating layer of a ceramic powder and then with a metallic oxide, and then an electrode is attached to the catalyst carrier to obtain a heating element having attached catalyst. When the heating element is applied to a petroleum stove, the exhaust gas cleaning device 9 is provided with the exhaust inlet 11 on the face of the combustion part 7 and also with the discharge port 12 at its upper part and fixed to the ceiling 13. When turning the ignition knob 19, the heating element having attached catalyst is immediately energized and its temperature rises. When the temperature of the heating element 8 exceeds the activation temperature of the catalyst, the wick is ignited and combustion begins but harmful substances formd at the time of ignition is completely removed because the temperature of the heating element is already in the oxidization zone. When the temperature of exhaust gas exceeds the activation temperature of the catalyst, the power source of the heating element 8 is automatically turned off.
