Abstract

PURPOSE: To back up an air controlling valve at its disabled state in an system for supplying secondary air controlled by said valve to an intake path by enabling an secondary air path to be closed when air fuel ratio is at the lean side for at least a predetermined time.
CONSTITUTION: When secondary air flow is controlled to adjust air fuel ratio by controlling an air controlling valve 16 through a control circuit 20 in response to the output of an air fuel ratio sensor 36 and said valve 16 is disabled under the opened condition by any causes, great amount of the secondary air flows into an intake path 10 to make mixture lean. Then, since the sensor 36 keeps on producing low level signals representing the lean condition, the output of a comparator 42 is maintained at high level. When time taken for maintaining said output at high level exceeds a predetermined value, a timer circuit 48 produces the high level output. Thus a drive circuit 50 is energized to open an electromagnetic valve 30 and introduce the atmospheric pressure into a chamber 18a of a path opening and closing valve 18 so that said valve 18 closes a secondary air path 14.
