Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable always optimum chemical dosing to be accomplished by detecting the viscosity of a suspension contg. sludge and deciding the flocculation performance.
CONSTITUTION: If the viscosity of the predetermined concn. sludge from, for example, a municipal sewer treatment plant is measured while ferric chloride which is a flocculant is being dosed thereto, the viscosity decrease gradient changes at a chemical dosing rate 5% as shown in the figure. The suspension 2 contg. sludge in a flocculating-and mixing tank 1 is agitated by agitating paddles 4. On the other hand, the chemical 6 in a storage tank 5 is supplied at a constant speed by a pump 7 into the tank 1. In the tank 1, the liquid 2 is flocculated by the chemical 6 to form flocs. The viscosity of the liquid 2 is measured with a viscosimeter 8, and the measured value is sent to a control unit 9 which stops the dosing of the chemical 6 at the instant when the viscosity change speed gradient changes. At this instant, the flocs grow markedly, and therefore only the necessary amount of the chemical is used.
