Abstract

PURPOSE:To lengthen the life of an alkaline storage battery at elevated temperatures, by adding a lithium compound as well as silicic acid or a silicate to the negative electrode of a generation element whose active material is cadmium. CONSTITUTION:An alkaline storage battery consists of a positive electrode, a negative electrode whose active material is cadmium, an alkaline electrolyte and a separator. The negative active material is added with a lithium compound that supplys lithium ions, and silicic acid or a silicate that supplys silicate ions. The ratio of lithium ions and silicate ions to the negative active material is preferred to be over 10<-4>mol and 10<-4>-10<-1>mol to 1mol, respectively. As a result, the rupture of cadmium ions is reduced especially at high temperatures, and thereby the battery life is increased.
