Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound in high yield, useful as a raw material for perfumes, etc., by reacting an α-thiocarbonyl compound with an allyl compound in an aprotic solvent in the presence of an alkali carbonate and/or hydrogencarbonate.
CONSTITUTION: An α-thiocarbonyl compound of formula I(R1 is alkyl or allyl; R2 is H, alkyl, aromatic compound, or alkoxy.), e.g. ethyl α-(methylthio) acetate, is reacted with an allyl compound of formula II(R3WR6 are H, alkyl, aryl, etc.; X is halogen or sulfonate), e.g. 1-bromo-2-heptene, in an aprotic solvent, e.g. methylene chloride, in the presence of an alkali carbonate, e.g. anhydrous potassium carbonate and/or hydrogencarbonate to obtain the object compound of formula III, e.g. 2-methylthio-3-butyl-4-pentenoic acid.
